Mitochondrial damage, what does that actually mean and why can’t mitochondria just fix themselves?

Mitochondria are like little batteries inside your cells. They power everything from your muscles and nerves to your brain and heart. Fluoroquinolone class of antibiotics can damage mitochondrial DNA because these antibiotics are designed to attack bacteria. Mitochondria actually evolved from bacterial ancestors, so the drugs sometimes confuse the two. That’s where the damage begins.

When that DNA is damaged, your body struggles to make energy. That’s why symptoms or adverse effects can be so widespread. But here’s the hopeful part: if enough healthy mitochondria are still functioning, your body can slowly replace the damaged ones. This is key! It takes time. Recovery might be slow or faster depending on how much damage was done, your genetics, and how well you protect your system during healing.

Think of it like a battery. If you're feeling 20% better, don’t use it all at once. Let it slowly build to 25%, then 30%. Once you're at 70% or more, you can gradually return to a steadier routine.

Healing isn’t just about time. It’s also about respecting your limits. It’s crucial to avoid anything that puts more stress on your mitochondria. That includes:

😣 Emotional stress
🏋️ Overexertion
🍟 Processed food
🐟 Farmed fish
🍖 Non-organic meats
🍷 Alcohol
☣️ Toxic chemicals
🚬 Cigarette smoke

After finishing a course of antibiotics in the fluoroquinolone (FQ) class*, you may be feeling quite worried if you're now experiencing sudden, jerking sensations in your body. What exactly are movement disorders (MDs), and how is it possible that widely-used antibiotics can result in such unexpected and largely unknown side effects?
Myoclonus** appears to be a common issue mentioned in patient support groups when experiencing various adverse effects beyond what’s listed in the package warnings. Could imbalances in GABA and glutamate levels be a contributing factor? This review article (see reference below) covers the FQ relationship with the following MD's:

**Myoclonus: refers to sudden, brief, involuntary muscle contractions or jerks. These muscle twitches can affect a specific part of the body or be more generalized, often appearing as a sudden and unpredictable movement.

Dyskinesia (rapid onset): is a movement disorder characterized by abnormal, involuntary, and repetitive movements. It can involve twisting, writhing, or jerky motions, and is often associated with conditions like Parkinson's disease or the side effects of certain medications.

Dystonia: is a neurological condition that leads to sustained and often painful muscle contractions, causing abnormal postures or twisting movements. It can affect specific body parts, such as the neck (cervical dystonia or torticollis) or the hands.

Cerebellar Syndromes: Cerebellar syndromes are a group of neurological disorders that result from damage to the cerebellum, a part of the brain responsible for coordinating voluntary movements. Symptoms can include incoordination, difficulty with balance, and tremors.

Ataxia: Ataxia is a neurological symptom characterized by a lack of coordination in muscle movements. It can result in unsteady gait, clumsiness, and difficulty with precise tasks like writing or buttoning a shirt.

Tic: A tic is a sudden, rapid, repetitive, and involuntary movement or vocalization. Tics are often associated with conditions like Tourette's syndrome. Motor tics involve movements, while vocal tics involve sounds or words.

Help may be found with a movement disorder specialist, which is a neurologist with further training and expertise specifically in movement disorders. Unfortunately, dealing with GABA issues remains tricky for FQ damaged patients; pharmacological approaches using GABA modulators and natural and lifestyle approaches are available, some to be approached with caution. Many do find that the twitching and jerking will dissipate with time but can be dependent on variables.
