Chemistry Researcher (Break: Childcare/Writing).
Former Teaching Fellow, Laboratory Technician and Scientific English Teacher.
Personal account: @EdtheChem
New year, new book! Researchers from @wpi_mana have produced System-Materials Nanoarchitectonics in the @NIMS_PR Monographs series.
My overview of Dr Nakanishi's (@tnkns) Functional Molecular Liquid materials is here:

I have been advocating a different way of doing science: publishing one figure at the time, and have other people critique and reproduce it.
From there, build stories.
My group are off to #masc2023. Childcare means I sadly cannot attend, but do say hi to my team and find out about some of their amazing work on supramolecular gels.
Meanwhile, if you want some light reading on the topic, I can recommend my recent review!

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of UVic chemistry professor Ian Manners earlier this week. Ian was a world-leading scientist and an outstanding member of our Faculty, and will be profoundly missed. https://t.co/8oyAkk4jR6
Part of me suspects that resignation-en-masse in response to UKRI's wilting to ministerial pressure is exactly what the situation was designed to provoke: a rapid exodus of opponents, producing seats to fill with supporters, "kicking out ideology"* for an easy political win. 1/2
"...fully committed to the principles of freedom of speech within the law and equality, diversity and inclusion."
"...determined to uphold these principles through the actions [they] are taking..."
Ejection?

We look forward to your participation.
On a personal note, yes, I left this in some sort of protest and appreciate the potential hypocrisy here. However, DEI panels exist because other panels were found lacking in relevant consideration: if all DEI-sympathetic leave, they surrender power to those against their cause.
(*being a paraphrasing of a recent political tweet I will neither endorse not regurgitate)
The problem with pressure through resignation is that said pressure comes from others rising. In a hateful environment, protest from concern could get dismissed as a mere performance. 2/2
We have a PhD studentship advertised through the @SoCoBioDtp, co-supervised by the wonderful @GTWilliamsChem and @HindCharlie. If you are interested please take a look here for full details: https://t.co/QFY1BkDGBt
For 8 years, I served unpaid on the EDI committee of a professional body. I tweeted authentically about my views, many related to EDI issues. It is a hard space to be 'impartial' in. There would, of course, be differences of opinion, but the committee achieved amazing things.
Funded PhD project available on an exciting new project @UCLChemistry with me and @DrMikeBooth, working on controllable delivery agents for nucleic acid therapeutics! Informal inquiries welcome, home and overseas students are eligible to apply. RTs appreciated.

Research shows that scientific endeavour is aided by diversity of thought, approach and experience and we want members of our community to know that we will continue to work to promote equality of opportunities and make science as open, inclusive and diverse as it should be.
Funded potential PhD position in organic synthesis and materials chemistry starting February 2024!
Application deadline is 22nd September

Weird thing has happened in #LK99 twitter storm - scientist's h-indices are being quoted, I think as a proxy for their reliability. This is not good, can't let it become normalised
Some examples:
Peter Higgs (Nobel prize) h=11
Grigori Perelman (solved Poincaré conjecture): h=10
