Mass incarceration in the US continues to be the elephant in the room. No matter the amount of research, graphs, or statistics, there has not been a significant push from the government to reel this issue in. Injustice has gone on far too long for this not to be handled #socl214

The outdated system of processing visas needs to be innovated to create a more efficient way to review visa applications. Reducing the high costs and wait periods in visa applications could drastically decrease the number of undocumented immigrants in the US #socl214

In the Affirmative Action video, it briefly describes how affirmative action can be perceived as a head start for minorities, however, I believe that it is more ‘leveling the playing field’ rather than giving them a straight head start #socl214

Asian Americans being labeled as the model minority furthers racial inequality because it allows for some people to believe that there is no racial disparity. Also, Bill O’Reilly used this label to further his white supremacy rhetoric, demonizing Asians in America #socl214

Acknowledging privilege makes some people angry because they are most likely exploiting their own privileges. Having an understanding of what privileges you have is a good start in breaking down the barriers between those who possess certain privileges & those that don’t #socl214

The “Pelo Bueno, Pelo Malo” video discusses how some people do not feel comfortable with their hairstyle. The concluding statements regarding how it is only important that you love your hairstyle is something that needs to be expressed more widely #socl214

@MelodyWarren_ I hate The Blind Side because of this. Almost every ignorant black stereotype is hit in this movie. I understand that it’s based on a true story, but the film makers writing Michael as having zero intelligence makes the entire movie especially gross.

Black representation in the film industry echoes their representation in most other industries. The Oscar’s, just 5 years ago, had all lead/supporting acting nominations as white people. This alone showcases the blatant racism and lack of representation black people have #socl214

@AaliyahRowan To further your point, the SAT test was developed 40 years before the Civil Rights Movement. The disparity in education between racial groups does have root from the years of oppression that black Americans suffered. 60 years after the movement, structural harm is still prevalent

From the video “Are the SATs Racists”, I learned that the SAT was derived from the IQ test, which already does not accurately show someone’s intelligence. Colleges still using this test as a means to determine whether a student gets into their institution is problematic. #socl214

Something that I found interesting from this week’s video is the U.K’s view on how they see Eastern Europeans as a minority in their country whereas we tend to group all Europeans together here in the United States #socl214
