A Sovereign Promise Broken: Et Tu Brutus?
An Indian Fauji’s Commitment: “I swear in the name of God that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the Constitution of India as by the law established and that I will, as in duty bound, honesty and faithfully serve in the regular army of the Union of India and go wherever ordered by land, sea or air and that I will observe and obey all commands of the President of the Union of India, and the commands of any officer set over me even to the PERIL OF MY LIFE.” This is the oath every soldier takes. No other service, except the defence services pledge their lives and bodies to the nation.

Soldiers forfeit their fundamental rights with utmost faith in the Conscience Keeping Polity and Media that they and their families would be taken care of by the nation in case of their death or disability. No one else in the country pledges this!

It is a betrayal when such faith is broken in retrospect. It alarms when a government goes back on sovereign promises which were kept sacrosanct by governments of varied political affiliations since independence.

@BJP4India, @PMOIndia, @nsitharaman, @rajnathsingh now want to revert the sovereign promise that income tax on pension of soldiers who are disabled in line of duty will be exempt from income tax. No country in the world taxes compensation given in lieu of bodily harm suffered in line of duty.

Old, disabled, unemployable veterans now have to take a monthly cut of 25% with NO means to alternatively earn than amount.

Voice of people in a democracy is unstoppable. India recorded 2.15 CRORE VIEWS on #KeepDisabilityPensionTaxFree —a tidal wave of support for our disabled soldiers!

Everyone talks about disability in combat. We also need to talk about diseases and disabilities that come from serving in difficult, high altitude regions - old tinned food laden with preservatives, diesel laden water in pipelines ( yes , known fact) , emotional isolation, PTSD and a lot more. A soldiers body and mind bear the brunt over time, and sometimes life threatening Diseases and disabilities can come calling post retirement too.

The life of a soldier is a truly hard one and if you cannot understand or empathise with them , you sir got no business to wax eloquent at rallies about your ‘Bahadur jawans’. Just zip it . Drop the charade or reverse the taxation on disability pension. Period.

@ocjain4 These % shows skewed statistics. The officer cadre of armed forces is less compared to the entire armed forces. Among officers doctors are again minuscule.The age of retirement is also more.With a small denominator the result looks high. Your post gives a false picture.@PMOIndia

How can the same disability differs on mode of exit , that for invalidation or superannuation or PMR which too is granted with the pleasure of President of India? Met Hon’ble Finance Minister Smt. @nsitharaman Ji today and shared my concerns regarding the proposed changes to the income tax exemption on disability pension for Armed Forces veterans.

Conveyed that while we fully understand the Government’s intent to ensure the exemption reaches only the deserving and to prevent any misuse, the current formulation may unintentionally place at a disadvantage those who continued to serve despite disability.

Discussed the finer nuances at length and urged that the exemption framework be revisited with sensitivity and fairness, keeping in mind the distinct and demanding nature of military service.
