@howemill@ClynelishFarm I’d say so.. only envisioned them being in for a short period but weather has not played ball. It’s not perfect but I think Vic makes a good point about being ok with certain things. As long as the make sense financially as well
@ClynelishFarm@howemill Think that’s the main thing is being ok about certain stuff as there isn’t a perfect system… often thought about moving calving later to reduce time in a shed/straw but for now I feel ok about needing to use a bit of straw. Would like the weather to cheer up to get some out tho
@ClynelishFarm@howemill 100% get you, if there was sheep in the mix as well I’d definitely have a rethink of when I’d be doing certain jobs. But for us getting calving out the way now means being able to focus on other jobs end of April/May/June with less distraction
@ClynelishFarm@howemill Personally prefer to get it out the way in March/April so I can enjoy May/June. Plus I don’t think you can beat a March/April born calf that’s ready to utilise both milk and early grass. Wouldn’t be calving this time of year without the back up of a shed though.
@RaemoreFarm@howemill@ThrimbyFarms Vermin definitely an issue, will be placing them individually in a long row in the field with a small spacing between them this year
@ThrimbyFarms@howemill Weighed a sample of them and they were doing 1.9kg over a 20 day period feb into march. A couple kg of hard feed included in that as well. Not chopped or through a mixer
@howemill@ThrimbyFarms Arable silage mix undersown. Calves done really well on it this winter. Not growing barley again this year and more of this going in
@beefshorthorn@WhitriggsStuart@ClynelishFarm Totally agree, no issue for conditionally for the payment but hope there is some flexibility with it as well and doesn’t lock farms into current calving dates/systems if they feel it might be a benefit to move the calving date.
@howemill If the rest of the heifers want to just copy her that would be grand!
Yeah I’m not sure how I would manage for that but to be fair… next years heifers were watching her over a fence 😂 does that count
