My efforts of the Western Reef Heron in Caernarfon Harbour this morning, showing and feeding very well alongside several Little Egrets and Grey Herons, against a magnificent backdrop of Caernarfon Castle.
Adult summer Squacco Heron still showing exceptionally well next to Crowland Wildlife Pond, moving between the river and adjacent willows and occasionally catching dameselflies.
@BirdGuides
Very pleased to see the Broad-billed Sandpiper at Dawlish Warren this morning, showing well at The Bight until it flew further out with the Dunlin/Ringed Plovers around 11am.
Also a few Cirl Buntings singing and showing closer to the car-park: the cherry on top of any Devon trip
Nice to catch up with the Eastern Subalpine Warbler in Cow Gap at Beachy Head in the late morning sunshine (between the downpours). It was often elusive but singing a fair bit and occassionally showing very well. Also 2 Dartford Warblers nearby.
Another quality day today - Kentish Plover at Broom early doors followed by a full circuit of @RSPBRainham from midday, which produced the pair of Black-winged Stilts, a Black Tern, Spoonbill, Whimbrel, Bearded Tits, 2 Great Egrets and Hobbies everywhere.
Yesterday's Ross's Gull (and nearby Nightingale) concluded a great week which also included Stejneger's & White-winged Scoters in Fife and the Tawny Pipit at Landguard - but the undoubted highlight was my first Sandwich Tern at the Brick Pits last night!
I've been a bit sporadic with posts so far this year so I thought I'd cover the best of the rest in one post. My highlights (all in the SE) have included Red-flanked Bluetail, Lesser Scaup, Tundra Bean Goose, Ruddy Duck, Smew, BN Grebe & SE Owl plus local Ring Ouzel & Redstart.
@peediepuss@birdsofalvecote I heard she found 500 species on the patch so she retired, she didn't need the Hooded Merg because she'd found it 6 times already
The female Hooded Merganser was on the Railway Pool at Alvecote this morning, diving and feeding constantly.
A funky bird even at some distance and no worse credentials (so far) than some accepted records. It may even be the same individual as in Somerset earlier in the year.
An incredible variety of birds at Port Meadow today considering its proximity to Oxford city centre - Ring-billed (briefly at 12:47), Little, Caspian and Med Gulls; 2 Blackwits; Woodcock over; Great Egret; Goosander; Kingfishers constantly; 2 Oycs and great numbers of Pintail...
The Killdeer appeared shortly before 8am this morning on the wet grass behind Ripley Farm Reservoir. It was also nice to see the Little Gull sat on the water and a "flock" of 4 White-tailed Eagles flying over the pig fields behind it.
@hantsbirdnews
Finally caught up with the Black-winged Kite at Ludham Bridge yesterday after a cold six-hour wait. 4 Cranes were nice interim entertainment.
A bit more local birding today but I still managed Red-necked Grebe, Long-tailed Duck, 2 Scaup and 2 Jack Snipe all within Beds!
2025 highlights: E. Bonelli's, Radde's, Hume's (in Beds!), Dusky, Icterine & Barred Warbler; Turkestan & Brown Shrike; L. Crested Tern, Zitting Cisticola, Least & Baird's Sandpiper; B-T Thrush; Collared Pratincole; Pallid Swift; Black Stork; Ortolan Bunting; R-R Swallow & more...
A very decent (albeit distant) haul at Tongue Fen this morning with the Snow Goose, 2 Tundra Beans, 11+ White-fronts and 3+ Bewick's Swans amongst c200 Whoopers. Also had a Cattle Egret, 8 Goosanders and an unseasonal Common Sandpiper between here and Spalding.
@Lincsbirding
Not quite as consistent as previous days but I eventually saw the Lesser Crested Tern at a couple of places across the Exe Estuary today. A Shag and 2 Red-breasted Mergansers were also decent - and some nice rainbows between the showers!
