@Matthew_Lucas_@Mc94Molly#EDU6323 I agree Matthew! May more institutions see the value in providing MOOCs to help accessibility and people who want to learn new skills - a great way to improve equity in access and affordability
@MasiaNeu@Mc94Molly#EDU6323 investing in education for all students through discounting is investing in future customers! Be smart in helping students learn and earning their loyalty.
@MasiaNeu@Mc94Molly#EDU6323 so interesting. I think there is definitely wiggle room to bring down the cost of accessibility (wireless carrier fees and access for students at home), as well as room for competition to drive down the cost of devices.
#EDU6323 Urban schooling points to the NMC goal of digital equity. The provision of technology is to be applauded - I wonder how we can achieve a partnership between school districts & providers to facilitate subsidized or even free access at home for students in K-12 education?
#EDU6323 I agree with @GingaJacob The link between being a lifelong learner and digital literacy is evident in our district Jake! I did notice that the adaption of technology and expectation of proficiency in the NMC report will require PD and support for educators.
#EDU6323 I LOVE the auto-correct video. 4 years looking down at a screen? Madness, or as the narrated says "An accepted form of digital insanity". What a poetic take the downside of personal devices. The "anti-social network" indeed. And we are modeling this behavior for our kids
#EDU6323 At the elementary level, the teacher may consult with other classroom teachers, principal or other supports to find the best way to reach a student in the classroom, rather than pulling them out, so they don't lose instructional time
@syanwar6#EDU6323 I wonder if Wesch's educator had had a PLN would they have consulted other educators on best approaches for engaging the "sleeper" student?
@BrianK34074880 #EDU6323 Brain that is quite a collection of literature geared towards understanding millenials. Do you think this is a different approach to previous generations?
#EDU6323 it brings in the concepts of trust, partnership and a dialogue in learning. It means education is not merely delivering the material, but actively engaging to learn from each other and encouraging discussion to help motivate students and reach students wherever they are
#EDU6323 what an enlightening video! In three minutes and change, Wesch makes us see that the simple act of reaching out to find out the "why" can make all the difference. Offering an opportunity to listen to a student, and see their perspective.
@Mc94Molly#EDU6323 Molly I teach 4 pre-K classes in our district. As the vast majority are not yet readers, book covers for voting/polling could work? Or perhaps pictures to reinforce a sequence? eg schedule for the day - backpack, lunch box, meet on rug, art, library, snack etc
@LaurenC42893676 #EDU6323 such a good question. I do think there is merit to raising hands, making thinking visible, and formulating and articulating a response out loud https://t.co/EM0QJZfkCA
@cyn_hurt#EDU6323 I agree Cynthia. Student engagement is key and as Miller (2014) mentioned the "elusive, inspirational quality" to help motivate students coupled with students engaged in their own formative assessment is a powerful combination to improve student learning.
@MasiaNeu#EDU6323 to your point Maria students with a fixed mindset can have a voice to try their answer & be open to feedback in a non-threatening manner as the poll in anonymous. This could really help a shy student move forward & engage in their learning
#EDU6323 I have used a tool called Class Flow https://t.co/9yfHUtpRrh previously in teaching a digital literacy lesson. Students were watching a presentation on copyright & creators rights, then responding via ipad & displays students responses on the big screen
#EDU6323 In reflecting on elementary students, I do think a tool to focus their attention and actively engage in questions will help motivate them to listen and be thinking when the teacher calls for a poll. More student engagement can only be positive!
