Foreign agent laws belong to authoritarian toolkit of oppressive regimes, Russia included. They prevent CSO from exercising their key function: to be independent watchdogs monitoring state power and state’s compliance with the rule of law.

“People start to forget why we arrived to the point when journalists can be blown up in brought daylight. If it weren’t for journalists, people wouldn’t find out about organized crime and ongoing corruption. These are European problems, not just of few Member States.”

Rejection of amendments to EMFA proposal by the @Europarl_EN is bad news for independent media & public discourse. Not adopting full ban on spyware and keeping privilege treatment of media content in the text with no additional safeguards is a huge mistake.
The @Europarl_EN has adopted the @EPCulture proposal for #EMFA. Now the file enters the next legislative phase: the trilogue.
The Parliament rejected amendments on media privilege in #Article17 that would’ve created a balanced media regulation across the EU. 🧵
