The elites of any civilisation have always been the wealthy – but the kind of wealth matters.
Across Greece, Rome, China, and Japan, societies recognised a basic political fact: the merchant class, however successful, pursued its own gain and was kept at arm's length from political power.
This was not a claim that wealth is immoral, but rather a recognition that landed aristocracy and commercial wealth produce different loyalties.
A landowner's fortunes are tied to the stability and long-term health of the state, and his prosperity depends on the survival of the polity because his wealth is rooted in the land.
Merchant wealth, by contrast, is mobile and easily detached from any single community. It can be shifted, hidden, or relocated the moment conditions change.
Landed elites were not immune to corruption, but their abuses were constrained by ties to the land. Merchants, by contrast, are financial nomads who can plunder cities or empires and vanish before the damage settles.
The wealthy landed aristocracy is anchored to the commonwealth, but the merchant is loyal to his coffer and abandons the city the moment it ceases to serve his interests.
🇪🇸🇳🇴 A 17-year-old Norwegian girl was killed in a hit-and-run on a motorway in Spain, after disappearing during celebrations following Norway’s football victory over Brazil.
Nikoline was last seen between 3am and 4am at a nightclub in Puerto Banús. Around two hours later, she was fatally struck by a truck whose driver fled the scene.
Spain’s Guardia Civil is investigating how she travelled more than 30km from the nightclub and is searching for the driver.

Many People (especially converts) are realizing that Catholicism is not as Right wing or Traditional as all the internet hype and apologists make it sound. The Modern Church actively support mass migration into Europe and North America. The Pope continues to condemn governments for not allowing and welcoming millions of foreigners into their countries.
The USCCB voted over 200 to 6 to fight Trump's deportation policy, because the President cut their tens of millions of dollars worth of funding from the Biden administration (which they used to facilitate illegals across the boarder).
The Vatican promotes the abolition of the Death Penalty, and calls people who are against their policy not truly pro-life. It places pro-abortion feminists in Charge of the Academy for life.
They advocate for radical climate change policies, and build altars out of dirt to have masses asking God forgiveness for environmental sins.
The Vatican refuses to excommunicate the German bishops who promote Homosexuality, transgenderism, abortion, female ministers and sex before marriage.
The Popes for over 60 years now have thrown ecumenical prayer gathering with non-christians, and have given the muslims a prayer room at the Vatican library.
90% of American Catholics support Contraception (including 75% who go to mass weekly). Over 60% believe in same-sex marriage. 76% believe unmarried couples living together should take communion (all Pew Research 2025).
I say all of this, because as a convert, I came into the Church believing that it was the Mystical body of Christ, and that it was a force for holiness in this world. However after 8 years, I have seen nothing but scandal after scandal. I am astonished that supermajorities of Catholics do not even hold to a basic biblical sexual ethic. I am tired of all of the Conservative and Traditional voices being sliced, or kicked out.
The only way for the Catholic Church to actually be fixed is for us to admit this is a problem, and call for and work on massive reform. However, this will take the Pope to humble himself, admit the crisis his Church is in, and apologize and repent. If he does not, his institution for many looses all credibility. It will also take people, bishops, and podcasters to stop defending the system and call for reform.
In his Summa Theologiae, St Thomas Aquinas laid out one of the most charitable yet practical arguments concerning immigration that effectively shaped the West for almost 1,000 years.
1. Immigration must always be proportionate so that foreigners can properly assimilate into the culture and mode of worship of the state.
2. Citizenship – and associated rights – should only ever be granted after the third generation to preserve the culture, mode of worship, and constitution of the state.
3. The common good of the citizens must remain the highest priority of the state, meaning, the state's obligation to provide aid to its neighbours can never be at the expense of the citizens.
However, Aquinas ends with the sobering reminder that some peoples and states are incompatible with one another, and these must be held as "foes in perpetuity".
Today, we were told that the 15-year-old boy who killed our beautiful 9-year-old niece, Aria, with a single stab wound to the chest is NOT GUILTY of murder or manslaughter.
How is this justice?

As a European Catholic, I must respectfully express my complete disagreement with the Holy Father on the issue of immigration.
This is where we Westerners—whether Christian or not—either live by the sword or die by the sword.
