"Are well-intentioned protective measures harming people by denying them the benefit of new technologies that could improve their lives? Are restrictions designed to prevent bad people from using technology unduly inconveniencing good people? Are controls around the use of the new technology impeding Americans’ right to make choices for themselves and their families? Are attempts to stuff new technologies into a straitjacket of prescriptive rules written with old technologies in mind, squelching the potential of those new technologies to change society for the better?" - @HesterPeirce

Her comments are not random.
This is part of a well funded and carefully organized campaign to demonize open models and our civil liberties in DC.
Multiple Senate staffers have told me that outside groups are requesting meetings to provide “demonstrations” where open source models are used to attack simulated hospital websites and demand bitcoin as ransom.
These are cheap scare tactics funded by groups seeking to control open systems. In reality, cyber defenders rely on open models daily to find critical vulnerabilities before attackers get there first.
If these groups are successful, we will all be poorer, less free, and more vulnerable to adversaries with increasingly capable systems.

“Today society is at a crossroads. Down one path lies the status quo: more data collection, more intermediary surveillance, more “know your customer” requirements that turn our financial rails into a panopticon. Down the other path lies an opportunity to use new technologies to improve our ability to catch criminals while collecting less personal information than ever before, and monitoring more sparingly to protect Americans’ privacy.” https://t.co/9fOpCwin3g
If governments are building new ways to watch how people spend, the public should be able to watch them back. The updated CBDC Tracker shows authoritarians leading the push for central bank digital currency, writes Cato's @EconWithNick.

🚨 Event Alert!🚨
Tune in at 10am TODAY to explore why American financial markets became the envy of the world, how they have contributed to prosperity, and what role Washington should—or should not—play in sustaining them. https://t.co/N7MAJm8U5c
The Trump administration decreased Bank Secrecy Act reporting thresholds last year from $10,000 to $200, crushing valuable business for many small companies.
While the threshold has since been moved to $1,000, the damage is already done.
