@C_Hendrick This doesn't surprise me as classes use whole-class SRS while the studies individualize SRS.
If a student happened to be daydreaming during an explanation, the individualized SRS will pick that up, while the whole class SRS will not.
Alpha School is following the Gartman Hype Cycle. Expectations peaked early 2026. Today, there is increasing skepticism. The important question is not where they are today but where they will be in a few years when they reach the Plateau of Productivity.
I've been critical of @Alphaschool in the past for making bold claims but not offering transparency or allowing third-party evaluation. That opens them up to the criticism they're receiving now, like in today's NYT (some of which was unfair). I also think it's unclear how much internal motivation a student needs to succeed there.
That said, I greatly applaud them and @jliemandt for experimenting with a radically new model. The current K-12 instructional model doesn't work very well and may be even worse in the future preparing kids for a world with AI.
While the promise of ed tech has been a huge disappointment for 20+ years, that doesn't mean it always will be. AI probably isn't good enough to overcome the challenge of engagement with even the median student today. That very well might change in a few years.
If so, we need education entrepreneurs building the products, tools, and school models to translate that technology into better student outcomes. Alpha is an important org in that effort. It's important we don't judge that effort prematurely, but they also need to be careful of the claims they make, particularly as they inch into public education.
The open-source Marble curriculum now covers Australia 🇦🇺
All 593 Australian primary standards across 7 subjects, mapped into the same knowledge graph we built for the the US and UK.
62% of what Australian kids learn is aligned with the US or UK. The rest is a lot more Australian and involves how communities protect themselves from bushfires, floods, droughts and cyclones.
Which country should we add next? 👇
Do the guides often encourage them to do their current task in full screen?
I'm actually curious to see screenshots. My understanding is that minimizing interactive visual elements on the screen is really important, even things as banal as the recycling bin icon etc.
But I guess since the students are far more motivated here, it's easier to drown out distractions.
@2AMommaBear@realMaalouf Arabic has two words for this:
ma'azif: instruments
ghina: singing
The hadith just says the music from instruments is Haram but not from the voice. Yes, it's really dumb.
In July we open-sourced a dynamic graph of everything a child learns in primary school. 1,590 concepts, 3,221 dependencies.
Now we’re turning every concept into interactive experiments kids can play and learn from.
First one, age 7: heat and water.
Everything that used to be a boring textbook can now be an engaging experience, potentially tailored to every child.
Kids education just got a massive upgrade.
@DrewPavlou And why release it at a time when AI video is so prominent that they could just claim "It's fake"?
This would've been so much more powerful even 5 years ago.
@justinskycak I'm not sure why, but often when I bring up self-pacing to staff in education departments, they assume I mean discovery learning.
I literally just mean self-pacing on a well curated curriculum, ideally with a knowledge graph, on a computer with distractions blocked.
