Sixty-eight years ago, while signing copies of Stride Toward Freedom in Harlem, Daddy was stabbed in the chest with a letter opener and nearly lost his life.
He survived, and what followed revealed something essential about his commitment to nonviolence. Even after experiencing violence so personally, he refused to allow hatred to determine his response.
Nonviolence was not simply something my father preached. It was a discipline he chose, even when the cost was deeply personal.

"I don't want you telling me to go back to Africa, unless you going back where you come from. I got a note one day telling me to go back to Africa and ever since that time-it's been three times a week I say it when I am in a white audience-l say, 'We'll make a deal. After you send all the Koreans back to Korea, the Chinese back to China, the Jewish people back to Jerusalem, and you give the Indians their land back and you get on the Mayflower from which you come...We all here on borrowed land. We have to figure out how we're going to make things right for all the people of this country." - Fannie Lou Hamer

“Every child, no matter where they are in the world, belongs to all of us” — James Baldwin
So white people ate black people, used our babies as alligator bait, used our skin for clothes, our hair as cushions, boiled us alive to make food, drank our blood for strength, and we are the violent animals?
Martin Luther King Jr. explained why comparing Black Americans to other immigrant groups misses a crucial part of history.
When asked why Jews, Irish, and Italians had managed to escape poverty while many Black Americans remained trapped by it, King said the comparison overlooked two fundamental differences.
The first was slavery.
As he put it:
"No other racial group has been enslaved on American soil."
Unlike other immigrant communities, Black Americans endured centuries of slavery followed by legalized segregation, creating barriers that had no true parallel.
The second difference was race itself.
King argued that while many immigrant groups could eventually assimilate into the broader society, Black Americans could not because their skin color remained a visible target for discrimination.
As he explained:
"While other racial groups have been able to change their accents or names to assimilate, the Negro cannot."
For King, that was why the comparison failed. History was different, and so were the obstacles that followed from it.

Police DO NOT prevent crime; they respond to it. Crime is prevented by higher wages, guaranteed health care, food security, high-quality child care, housing, good schools, and addiction treatment.
"People think that when we talk about...being Pro Black and what not, it means...being anti white. The only reason why they think that is because being pro white has always meant being anti Black. It's not the same thing."
My mother warned decades ago that voting discrimination was not a relic of the past, and today her words still ring with painful clarity.
What she understood then is what we are still confronting now: when voting rights are weakened, democracy itself is diminished. The methods may evolve, but the intent to silence, dilute, and discourage remains.
As we face renewed efforts that chip away at the protections so many fought to secure, may we listen carefully to her witness and recommit ourselves to defending the heart and soul of democracy.

47 years of living in the south and here’s what I know to be true. If they have a confederate flag on display, they’re doing awful things to kids, pets, and/or spouses. Lots of hate comes with that loser banner.
Don Lemon: “Every time a black person names a racist thing, somebody accuses them of making it about race as if it was not already about race. As if the people who drew these maps were not thinking about race every single second they were drawing them. What is happening to Black voters in this country, it is a crime”
They were in absolute fear for their lives.
They would have hung these people if they thought they could get away with.
Now crying because they have to pay for their hate.
If Iran posted: "There is no guarantee the plane carrying US diplomats will land safely," Every Western government would call it an act of terrorism. Every headline would say "Iran threatens to murder diplomats."
There would be emergency UN Security Council sessions. An Israeli account posted the same threat about Iranian diplomats, no UN session. No condemnation. No headline. That asymmetry IS the story.
In March of 2023, a self styled “Goon Squad” of Rankin County officers kicked in the door of a Braxton, Mississippi home and tortured Michael Jenkins and Eddie Parker for nearly an hour and a half. They beat and tased them, used racial slurs, sexually assaulted them and shot Michael in the mouth.
This was not a rogue unit acting in a vacuum. For years, families in Rankin County and across Mississippi have reported raids, beatings and humiliation at the hands of law enforcement with little to no accountability. The “Goon Squad” case simply forced the country to look at what Black residents have been saying all along.
This post is not about shock value. It is a reminder that this level of violence is still possible whenever police operate without real oversight, transparency or consequences. If this could happen to Michael and Eddie just a little over three years ago, it can happen again.
We need to stay informed and amplify their stories, and always demand structural change. Not just prison time for a few officers, but a policing system that will no longer do this to our kids and our community.

D. L. Hughley on Trump: “I’m very proud I’ve never voted for a president who raped women and children. I never voted for a president who defrauded charities. I never voted for a president that celebrated the death of somebody. And half this country can’t say that”
