The word provider was never a clinical term. It is billing language, born in Medicare and insurance paperwork, and it migrated into the exam room. One infectious disease physician just laid out what it is doing there.
Janet Jokela is an internal medicine and infectious disease physician, a former treasurer of the American College of Physicians, and a longtime academic. Her case is not about turf. It is about what a word does to the patient's understanding of their own care.
Start with what the word flattens. On a form, everyone is a provider. A physician with eleven or more years of training and colleagues with a fraction of that become the same word on the page. She is explicit that this is not a knock on nurse practitioners or physician assistants, who she calls invaluable. The problem is that the patient reading the form, or the badge, cannot tell who is who, and words are how patients understand their care.
Then ask who the flattening serves. A workforce of interchangeable providers is easier to schedule and cheaper to staff. It works very well for the billing systems and the staffing spreadsheets. It does not work for the patient trying to understand who is at the bedside.
She has watched it from the family side of the bed. When her own mother was hospitalized, her mother could not tell her who was taking care of her. Everyone was her provider.
The adoption is ambient, which is why nobody remembers choosing it. It shows up on the badge and in the email signature, and clinicians start using it themselves without thinking about it. The word arrives before the decision does.
There is an institutional cost too. She points to a past president of the American College of Physicians who argued that when clinicians accept the provider label, they give away their authority and cede it to the institutions. The word came from the reimbursement system, and adopting it lets the reimbursement system name the profession.
The pushback is always the same: it is just a word. Her answer is that words are how patients understand their care, and that the fix costs nothing, requires no committee, and can start with the next introduction at the next bedside. Her advice to patients: "Who is the physician on my care team today? It's a fair question, and you're allowed to ask it."

Today, we at Nuria Store submit a formal proposal to His Excellency Dr. William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya, calling for national support to Kenyan authors and the stocking of Kenyan-authored books in every public and community library in the country.
Kenyan readers, including our schoolchildren and university students, should find stories written by Kenyans as a normal part of visiting their local library not a rare discovery. We look forward to working with KNLS, the Ministry responsible for Sports, Culture and Heritage, and the Council of Governors to make this a reality.

@NateJay101 That's not a stupid question, Bro.
That being a critical thinker, which in todays society is BAD
That's why I do itππ
I think it's a very good question.
That's why I post to get people to asking questions,
not to believe me,
but to QUESTION EVERTHING.

Bhawnaβs Friday Storytime, Episode 01
For years, I was the girl who cared about almost everything⦠except my own health.
I could work for hours, build things, take calls, chase goals but ask me about my sleep schedule, workouts or what I ate?
yeahβ¦ we don't talk about that π
I kept telling myself, βIβll take my health seriously someday.β
Two months ago, I decided I was done waiting for βsomedayβ So I tried a little experiment.
no complicated diet.
no crazy fitness challenge.
just a routine I could repeat every single day, even on weekends.
and somehow my life now looks like this
4:00 AM β wake up + warm cumin water
4:00β4:30 β Read Books
4:30β6:00 β light workout + freshen up
6:00β6:30 β breakfast
6:30β8:30 β deep work on something Iβve quietly been building for 4 months π
8:30β9:00 β meditation / Vipassana
9:00β12:00 β focused office work
12:00β1:00 β lunch
1:00β3:00 β meetings + calls
3:00β5:00 β more focused work
5:00β6:00 β dinner + a small walk
6:00β9:00 β learn + build my own things/ Office work
9:30 PM β Light off & sleep
itβs only been two month, now it feels like Iβm living inside a completely different body.
my mind feels quieter.
I think more clearly.
I can focus for longer.
my energy doesn't crash the same way.
even my skin and health, which Iβve struggled with for years, started changing.
the funny thing isβ¦
I thought waking up at 4 AM would be the biggest part of this experiment, it wasn't.
the biggest change came from something much simpler eating dinner at 5 PM, that experiment deserves its own story.
( P.S The book you see in the photo is my current read, round two this time)
