Because people like me, with a PhD in Computer Science, understand that the underlying maths on which modern AI is based of have limitations that cannot be overcome with better, cheaper HW or better techniques.
modern travel is increasingly flying 10 hours to experience a slightly different version of the same globally optimized lifestyle.
same third wave coffee. same natural wine bar. same brutalist menu. same sourdough. same beige hotel. same tasteful ceramics. same instagram lighting.
what a ridiculous convergence.

I'd like to have a call about this if you have a chance.
@SopranoLFC It probably is this. However I've seen Jimmy Carr in a large venue (not quite an arena) and he totally killed. Seeing Louis CK next year in a more intimate venue and hope that works out
Shane Gillis at the O2 was slightly disappointing. Failed to follow the opening acts, and unusual to watch someone working on new material in an arena, all work was very derivative and bits lacked polish and any structure.
@JoshuaHartnell Nice that you enjoyed it! I guess I may've just set the expectations a little higher as beautiful dogs was very polished and I love the odd MSSP episode.
Going to most PhD programs is like becoming a world expert at some really, really arcane skill, such as jousting, and then they kick you out and you realize no one has any use for what you've spent years of your life mastering.
@pharath_one@bschoelkopf And that would also not be an untrue statement.
But I get what you're saying. I think the focus here should be 'Is the award going to researchers that at least set out to solve a problem in physics'
@pharath_one@bschoelkopf Perhaps not in theoretical physics, but considering ANNs are used extensively at CERN for particle detection/classification, filtering, dim. reduction, trajectory restructuring, and countless other things, it can be argued that it has lead to 'discoveries' in applied physics.
