🚨🇨🇩 DRC KALEMIE | PROTESTERS TARGET JOSEPH KABILA
“Judas Iscariot!” Protesters give former President Joseph Kabila a new nickname.
On October 17, demonstrators in Kalemie, Tanganyika Province, joined a campaign organized by the civil society movement All for Congo (TPC), led by William Mukambila.
Participants accused Kabila of betraying the DRC and alleged links to Rwanda-backed rebellion. They also called for a national referendum, arguing that Congolese citizens should exercise their constitutional sovereignty.
🇨🇩 “2026 will never be 1997!” protesters declared.

The @nytimes article's headline is misleading. Whether intentionally or unintentionally, it casts the DRC in a negative light, despite presenting no evidence that the DRC engaged in wrongdoing in connection with the $17.6 million transfer to TX-AT, a Texas-based defense firm.
The article does not even allege that the DRC participated in the disputed diversion of funds, authorized improper payments, or knowingly engaged in misconduct. Yet, by featuring the DRC in the headline without establishing any wrongdoing, the article has led readers to associate the DRC with allegations of corruption.
In the interest of journalistic integrity, @nytimes, @tylerpager, @AKurmanaev, and Managing Editors @marclacey and @carolynryan should revise the headline to accurately reflect the nature of the dispute and clarify that the article presents no evidence of wrongdoing by the DRC government.

@Chauffeur243_ Thanks for the question re: @BCC_RDC Governor Wameso's recent speech in Kolwezi. To be clear, I share his concern about the problem that not enough mining export revenue is being brought back to #DRC to build up forex reserves and the overall economy. But I think the problem - and therefore the solution - is bigger than simply forex.
Here's my response to your concerns where I use a simple example to illustrate what miners who follow the tax and repatriation law (many do, but some do not fully) are doing to illustrate this larger problem.

Some journalists appear more interested in misleading the public than informing it. If anyone is deliberately spreading false or distorted information to serve Rwanda’s interests, they must be held accountable for their reporting.
The facts matter: a $17.6 million payment from the DRC government to an American defense company does not, by itself, prove wrongdoing by the Congolese government. Any allegations must be supported by evidence, not political manipulation.
Congolese journalists have a responsibility to defend the truth, verify their sources, and expose misinformation—regardless of who benefits from it. The DRC deserves journalism that serves the truth, not propaganda that undermines its national interests.
Congolese reporters seem to have unfortunately misunderstood the facts in the @nytimes article referenced below. According to the article, $17.6 million was transferred from a DRC government account to TX-AT, a Texas-based defense and security firm that supplies defense equipment to U.S. and international law enforcement agencies. The DRC is fighting a war involving Rwanda and #M23, so a transaction with an American defense supplier is not, in itself, unusual. We need more of this.
The problem is that TX-AT is now linked to a brewing scandal in D.C. And despite attempts by President @PaulKagame's agents and allies to connect the DRC to this controversy, the payment itself does not establish wrongdoing by the DRC government. Just as you are not responsible for how your landlord spends your rent money, the DRC is not responsible for how an American company spends funds received for military equipment.
The DRC is fighting for its survival, and misinformation is President @PaulKagame's favorite weapon. Congolese journalists must avoid unintentionally spreading misinformation that could be used to discredit the DRC before the United States Congress and the world. Report the facts. It might save your country.

One thing is clear: the world knows this is morally wrong💔No amount of sportswashing can erase Congo’s suffering. Bringing #F1 back to #Africa is great, but not at the cost of human lives. Don’t force F1 fans to choose between the sport they love and basic humanity. #Rwanda#drc
Formula 1’s choice of Rwanda for its first race in Africa in three decades shows its utter indifference to human rights. Rwanda is a brutal police state that has invaded the Democratic Republic of Congo to seize its minerals. https://t.co/3kb5Q1grl3
#RDC

#F1 now reeks of the blood of innocent Rwandan and Congolese civilians killed amid #Kagame’s actions. Women are raped, children die in #DRC while in 🇷🇼 critics are still killed or arrested on false charges. #SouthAfrica would have been a better choice for the African Grand Prix.

The news article below offers a glimpse into why the DRC and its duly elected government are under attack. Ever since President #Tshisekedi signed a historic minerals partnership with the United States, the attacks against him and the DRC have intensified.
Just yesterday, Belgian authorities raided the homes of President Tshisekedi’s family members in Belgium. This occurred just days after former DRC President #Kabila admitted to leading #M23 and stated his intent to illegally remove President Tshisekedi from office. The timing cannot simply be a coincidence.
The Europeans and their friend, President @PaulKagame, view the DRC as their domain. The U.S. playing a key role in the DRC is a threat to European exploitation of the Congolese people. The United States should deepen its friendship with the DRC, for our shared economic and national security interests are now intertwined.
