On 21 September, the Bahá’í Office of External Affairs hosted an observance of the International Day of Peace at the Bahá’í House of Worship, bringing together friends from government, civil society, academia, religious and cultural communities, media and other sectors.

Reflecting on this year’s theme, “Invest in Peace – For Everyone, Everywhere, Every Day,” speakers highlighted the importance of investing in relationships, dialogue and collaboration, and of nurturing peace not only through institutions and communities, but also in our families, neighbourhoods and online spaces.

From a Bahá’í perspective, lasting peace is rooted in the oneness of humanity and requires a conscious effort to build unity, justice, trust and cooperation.

We are deeply grateful to all who honoured our invitation and to the many individuals and organisations working in different capacities to champion peace in Uganda, from national spaces to the grassroots.

At a workshop in Jinja City on enhancing social accountability, stakeholders are reflecting on the role of citizens in promoting ethical leadership, responsible governance and national transformation.

Under the Partnerships on Accountability, Civic Engagement and Rights Project, with support from 🇩🇰🇸🇪🇳🇱🇮🇪, our @Aruacity Legal Officer, @michmichelle256, continues its engagement with Lugbara Kari and other stakeholders to address harmful social norms and strengthen institutional responses to gender-based violence.

As part of this ongoing work, FIDA-Uganda joined a stakeholder dialogue convened by @ceforduganda, bringing together government, civil society, cultural and religious leaders to reflect on practices and attitudes that continue to affect women’s rights, including violence, unequal decision-making, discriminatory inheritance and property practices, and the unequal burden of unpaid care.

The dialogue also provided an opportunity to build on Lugbara Kari’s ongoing efforts to reform and speak out against harmful cultural practices. Stakeholders agreed to strengthen the dissemination of Lugbara Kari pronouncements and increase awareness of the Arua City Gender and Sexual Violence Ordinance.

We will continue supporting this work through community sensitisation, legal aid and representation, client support and radio engagements, helping translate institutional commitments into greater awareness, protection and access to justice for women and communities. 🌐

Roya Sabet Denied Medical Treatment and Medical Leave in Adelabad Prison

It was learned on 7 August 2026 that Mrs. Roya Sabet, a Bahá’í imprisoned in Adelabad Prison in Shiraz, has been deprived of access to necessary medical treatment and medical leave despite health problems and injuries sustained more than one month earlier while in prison.

On 1 July 2026, Mrs. Sabet suffered a fall in the bathroom of Adelabad Prison and sustained serious injuries to her back and neck. Following the incident, she submitted three written requests asking the authorities to refer her to the forensic medical organisation for assessment of her physical condition and to grant her medical leave so that she could consult a doctor and receive treatment. Her relatives also pursued the matter through the relevant authorities and offices, but these enquiries have so far produced no result, and the requests have not been approved.

On Friday 7 August 2026, Mrs. Sabet experienced another serious health episode, including severe headaches and dizziness, during which her blood oxygen level fell to 70 per cent.

Despite her condition, she was not examined or given necessary medical treatment and was instead told to “go into the open air and take deep breaths”.

Concerns have also been raised regarding the possible opening of a new case against Mrs. Sabet on the allegation of “propagating the Bahá’í Faith” inside the prison.

Mrs. Sabet, a resident of the United Arab Emirates, had travelled to Shiraz in December 2023 to visit her elderly parents. She was arrested in February 2024 by the Intelligence Organisation of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and was later sentenced to a total of 25 years’ imprisonment on charges including “membership in the perverse Bahá’í sect” and “propaganda against the regime”, of which 10 years are enforceable.

The @JudiciaryUG has highlighted our engagement with the Principal Judge, Lady Justice Jane Frances Abodo, where we discussed practical opportunities to strengthen access to justice for women, children and other vulnerable court users. ⚖️

The discussion explored areas including expanding court-annexed mediation, improving justice delivery for communities in hard-to-reach areas, strengthening disability inclusion, and making digital justice more accessible. These conversations are an important step towards building a justice system that is more accessible, inclusive and responsive to the needs of those who face the greatest barriers to justice.

In April 1952, Uganda elected its first Local Spiritual Assembly. Its members included Fred Bigabwa, Crispian Kajubi, Peter Musoke, Enoch Olinga, Músá Banání, Samiheh Banání, ‘Alí Nakhjavání, Violette Nakhjavání, and Philip Hainsworth. Their task was not to exercise authority but to learn how to consult, unite diverse communities, and contribute to the common good. Their example continues to inspire efforts toward collective progress today.

This anniversary is not the culmination of a journey but another step along a path of learning and service. The challenges before humanity are significant, yet the capacity of people to work together for the common good is greater still.

With gratitude for the past, confidence in the power of unity, and hope for the future, we look ahead to the years to come.

May we continue to walk together—neighbours, friends, families, and communities—striving to build a society that reflects the dignity of every human being and the oneness of humanity.

This week the Bahá’i Community of Uganda was honored to host Rev. Canon Aaron Mwesigye, the Director, and staff of the Directorate of Ethics & Integrity @ethicsug, Religious Affairs, Office of the President at the Information Centre on the Bahá’i Temple grounds.

During the meeting, a brief introduction of the Bahá’i Faith and its history in Uganda was shared. The Director of Religious affairs shared the functions and role of the directorate in building unity among the various religious entities and streamlining their registration. They explored shared values, faith partnerships, and national development.

The Director reflected on his longstanding relationship with the Bahá'í community and exchanged publications with the National Spiritual Assembly and the Bahá'í Library, strengthening a spirit of collaboration. The meeting was attended by the General Secretary to the National Spiritual Assembly of the Bahai’s of Uganda and representatives from Bahá’i institutions and agencies.
