@Tomozaurus@nikicaga Oil and gas drilling being allowed in the natural environment of the Sagebursh Lizard will not meaningfully impact Americas natural beauty, the continued existence of the Sagebrush lizard, or the beauty of our national parks
The logistical train of any modern military force is huge. The UK doesn’t even have an armor brigade anymore let alone the logistics to support one. They needed US support for air ops in Libya in 2011, a far close theater. Light infantry regiments would be murdered en masse by even dated armor without overwhelming air support. I doubt Guatemala’s about to invade but Belize’s security rests on the U.S. and broader norms around invasions. How confident are you in norms and the largesse of modern day America to safeguard a country in the long term?
@mnolangray I doubt the UK has the ability or will to deploy forces that far abroad, severely degraded since the Falklands. Bolivia maintains a navy precisely because they maintain claims on Chilean territory! It’s true the U.S. broadly stops this, but U.S. policy can be erratic
@TrueSlazac That’s why the drinking age exists, it’s largely to prevent drunk driving not drinking. Had a large and measurable effect on teen mortality (because people at more risk taking ages are disproportionately likely to make dangerous decisions involving alcohol)
@LinkofSunshine It seems to be driven by her relative affinity (or lack thereof) for either country. Any reason to believe she has a newfound affinity for Israel?
@lymanstoneky That may be true for gambling but certainly not alcohol. There’s a ton of alcohol brands that are rarely if ever binge drank. Certainly cheap hard liquors are far more reliant on problematic (water bottle full of vodka at work style) drinkers, but plenty of brands are not
I bucked all advice from my friends (and resisted my conservative bias) and decided to fully trust the Times journalists.
As they left my home they asked that I not talk to any other outlets and I insisted then and repeatedly over the following weeks that I would keep my word and only share this story with them.
But then the weeks dragged on. They kept coming back to us saying the editors needed more. I needed to go on the record (okay). We need more screenshots (okay). I met every bench mark they set, eager to provide more sources or evidence as needed.
After the story went up I began to ask them … wait, where are the stories from the other women? Where are their accusations of sexual assault? Why am I the focus? Why are there 11 paragraphs dedicated to detailing my work history (more than has been published about Graham’s by far)?
Why does it say “nobody could corroborate” when I offered them sources that COULD corroborate?
Why did they include an out of context quote from a friend joking “do not call Graham” after I called off my wedding? (Because she knew I would never).
Where were the screenshots they’d said they would use? Or the mention that I’d supported local democrats and that most of my family (and husband) are liberal?
The editors said it was too much, they explained.
The Times also failed to include any mention that I DID confide in multiple friends through the years that Graham had been abusive — long before he was running for office. Those friends confirm they told the Times so.
It dawned on me that this really was a set up all along. The journalists I trusted who convinced me to share a story I never wanted to tell methodically delayed and twisted this into a gift to the Platner campaign. Violating the trust of his victims. Shattering the trust I placed in them with the most vulnerable story of my life.
And at the end of my call with them I reluctantly accepted their insistence that this was still a powerful story and that I had done a brave thing. And I thanked them for all the hard work they had put into it.
Still fawning after all these years.
@Love_Thy_Hood@Empty_America Met a number of the guards for death row inmates in Texas. There are always a few women. They’re treated like royalty. The princesses of the whole prison with a night and day difference experience from the men
@delyramehari109@pazarts97@lymanstoneky had a piece estimating it which found citizen population’s still have a meaningfully above replacement birthrate, however, they are minorities and the countries overall populations are very reliant on immigration

@lymanstoneky@RevSnow67 Not entirely, basic allowance for housing (if eligible, which all officers and senior NCOs are) is a tax free lump sum monthly payment based off of media rents in your area. My PCS from TX to NY netted me like $2k/month (though rent increased even more)
@hecubian_devil Mad respect for how consistently you differentiate your personal circumstances/experiences from broader trends. A rare virtue on this site
