Lobbying to SAVE the North Down Coastal Path from an ill-advised planning application to develop it with concrete, under the misnomer of Greenway creation.
When the right decision is made by @ANDborough, the only response is to be grateful, and applaud those who made this brave decision to listen to the public outcry. We look forward to building more democratic structures so that community planning becomes a byword for success.
At tonight’s Council meeting (26 January 2023), a decision was made by Elected Members to withdraw* Planning Application (LA06/2020/0530/F) – the proposed Kinnegar to Donaghadee Greenway.
Of the 33,000 badgers slaughtered last year under the pretence of the Badger cull, exactly none were tested for Btb. Hard to claim something is scientific if you don't collect the data @TonyJuniper This isn't about disease control, but the removal of a species to please the NFU.
Planning application LA04/2019/0775/F raised hundreds of objections and serious environmental concerns. Approved subject to 25 conditions. Compliance with these 25 conditions is "not monitored". Something very wrong here. @belfastcc@LaganHomesNI#loveourlagan#saveourlagan
The environmental destruction taking place in Lagan Lands East within our Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is shocking. Something very wrong here. @belfastcc@LaganHomesNI#loveourlagan#saveourlagan
It's started already: many councils' over-mowing of public grassy areas. Dandelions, celandines, clover - humming with life, lifelines for pollinators - mown down to lifeless, 'tidy' grass deserts. Who wants their council to give nature a chance instead?
My stepdad @ChrisGPackham has bared the brunt of obsessive bullies who’ve burnt down his gates, thrown dead animals into his garden + sent death threats. They spread lies and hate because he stands up for wildlife.
I stand by him wholeheartedly

It is getting even more impossible to ignore the climate crisis. The fact that people in power still somehow live in denial, and actively move in the wrong direction, will eventually be seen for and understood as the unprecedented betrayal it is. It is just a matter of time.
@BettyDoesBangor@NorthDownGreens@NDownAlliance @simply_bangor @codownspectator It doesn't look too pretty @BettyDoesBangor but we have been in liaison with NiWater and they actually completed this without any widening. Give it a couple o years, and the natural vegetation should get a chance to grow back. NIEA are overseeing the reinstatement which is good!
Many so-called 'weeds' are in fact wild plants that are immensely beneficial to all sorts of wildlife. Dandelions are often targeted with weedkiller by people who want things 'neat and tidy' – but the flowers support more 50 insect species!

#nature
The springtime hacking of hedgerows & trees to keep nature ‘neat & tidy’ (often with ugly results) will be on us anytime now. Please councils, landowners & others, think twice before decimating birds’ nesting habitat & vital trees: is it essential or can you #GiveNatureAChance?
10 days ago I sent Chancellor @Jeremy_Hunt a letter (below) asking him to postpone the govt's 20% increase in energy bills on 1 April.
Since, SEVENTY major charities (below), & the energy industry trade body have signed up to support the letter.
IF YOU SUPPORT THE CALL PLS RT
Healthy wetlands can revive biodiversity, improve water supply, store carbon, help tackle floods & droughts, and benefit livelihoods & health. But 35% of the world’s wetlands have been destroyed since 1970. Let’s restore and rewild our wetlands 💦
There is still time to take part in the consultation of the Biodiversity Action Plan at @ANDborough

🌳Trees – just make our streets look amazing😎
We spend a lot of time talking about how urban trees help keep us cool, reduce pollution, restore nature, help us adapt to climate change, calm traffic etc
But lets just🥂celebrate how great they look, and how that makes us feel🙂
Ulster wildlife need financial support to continue the valuable work & advocacy they do in Northern Ireland.
Membership is a way to gain something for yourself while giving to this worthy cause.
Somewhere, very near you, is a tiny being, just going about their day.
They don’t care about you, or me, nor any of our worries.
And I find so much comfort in that 💚🐌
There where a few nice birds out around the north down coast path today, great to see some sunshine on my day of for a change. @UlsterWildlife@RSPBNI@BTO_NIreland
