South Africa’s manufacturing sector has shrunk from around 25% of GDP in the 1980s to about 13% today. Factories close, jobs disappear, and young people are left without opportunities. Years of power failures, collapsing logistics, corruption, and policy uncertainty have come at a massive cost. A country cannot build prosperity by deindustrializing its economy. #SouthAfrica #Jobs #Economy
Chery has just taken over the old Nissan factory in Rosslyn, Pretoria - a plant that's been building cars since 1963.
Next year they'll pour money into upgrading it, and production kicks off around the middle of 2027.
• Once up and running, the plant can churn out 50 000 cars a year
• Chery's long-term goal is to sell over 100 000 cars annually in SA
• All 692 workers who were employed by Nissan are staying on (this is wonderful news)
• Another 3 000 jobs are expected to be created up and down the supply chain (this is even more wonderful news)
For context on that 100 000 target - Toyota currently sits on top with a record 148 124 vehicles sold last year, with Suzuki and Volkswagen behind it, both under 100 000.
Chery owns a stable of brands that include: Chery, Jetour, Jaecoo, Omoda, iCaur and Lepas. Their Tiggo 4 Pro was SA's best-selling passenger car last year.
First off the new production line will be the Jetour T-Series, the Jaecoo J5 and the Chery Tiggo Cross.
What do you make of it - is this a sign of who's winning the price war?

Yes because NGOs like SERI suddenly disappear when the City of Cape Town enforces basic by laws, meanwhile the City of Johannesburg can’t even evict and reclaim a hijacked building with shack structures inside without being slapped with an interdict.

Precisely why we can't get housing in Cape Town. Property agents are the main reason. They also lease/ sell properties to these ones 👇🏾.
No documentation but if the money is present they get housing meant for us South Africans. The DA knows this and they just let it happen.

King Goodwill Zwelithini cried during his coronation when making his acceptance speech in 1971, realizing the enormous responsibility of being a successor to his father, King Bhekuzulu ka Solomon.
I once watched a Netflix series, The Crown, about Queen Elizabeth's upbringing and the pressures of being an heir to the crown. Her sister Margaret, at some point became rebellious and an alcoholic. Elizabeth was closely guarded. The same happened with Prince Harry, while William was closely watched.
I suspect uBayede King Misuzulu may be suffering from the same pressure of having to fill big shoes of a man who ruled the Zulu nation with honour for 52 years. There's too much expectation on him. It must be a source of anxiety and stress, a lonely path. I wish it was possible that he could get help, psychiatric help. But obviously it must be taboo of sorts to even suggest that for a King. But I feel like some kind of intervention is needed for his mental health. Just observing from a distance. 😢
On July 7, 2026, the Public Protector released the findings of a four-year investigation into service delivery in Langa Flats and parts of Khayelitsha, concluding that the City of Cape Town had failed to progressively provide constitutionally required basic municipal services in the affected communities, which amounts to maladministration.
