It is time for the UK Government to formally recognise the Armenian Genocide. The words of the great British historian Arnold J. Toynbee remain clear evidence of the atrocities committed by the Ottomans:
“In April 1915, the Ottoman Government began to put into execution throughout Turkey a systematic and carefully prepared plan to exterminate the Armenian race.”
@Independent Reducing genocide to “wartime deaths” is historical whitewashing. It’s no wonder trust in mainstream media is eroding. @Independent should correct the wording or accept that it will be seen as enabling genocide denial narratives.
There has been talk of recognizing the Armenian Genocide for decades in Israel, each time it was never clear why it hadn’t happened many years ago, but instead always got caught up in politics, as if there was a “right” time to do it due to bad or good relations with Ankara
I reported on these efforts years ago. One thing that I always wondered about is that in the Armenian Quarter of Jerusalem the local Armenians would put up maps of the genocide and people often ripped them down…if you want to recognize the genocide then that should also mean listening to and respecting the local Armenian community, it should mean incorporating this into education and not a kind of one-off declarative
Something I have personally lobbied for in this country for many years now — and a long overdue recognition:
The Israeli government has unanimously approved Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar’s proposal to officially recognize the Armenian Genocide.
“It is never too late to do the right thing” said Foreign Minister Saar.
The Armenian Genocide, largely seen as a precursor to the Holocaust, was the systematic mass killing and deportation of Armenian Christians carried out by the (Muslim) Ottoman Empire from 1915-1917, resulting in the deaths ~1.5 million people. Until today, Turkey has refused to take responsibility, destroyed evidence in attempt to hide their crimes against humanity, and even persecuted those who spoke out about it.
I am pleased to see Israel take the right step in recognising this horrific tragedy with a brilliant nation that against all odds has survived on the face of Islamist neighbors seeking to eliminate it — just as Israel has.
That said, I remain heartbroken about the horrific conduct of Azerbaijan towards Armenians using Israeli weapons, and this is something that must be addressed, but this recognition is an excellent first step for two nations facing very similar histories and threats.

I may well be in the minority, but the bitter truth is this: Britain’s problems neither began with nor will end with Keir Starmer. They are deep-rooted, decades in the making with no quick remedies.
It may take a generation for Britain to recover. Until all mainstream parties accept that reality, politics will remain a cycle of blame and short-termism. Britain needs leaders focused not on the next election, but on the next generation and willing to work together to secure it
Horomos monastery founded by Armenian monks fleeing the Byzantine empire in the 10th century. Built during the reign of Bagratuni King Abas of Ani. It was described as one of the most important monasteries of the Christian east.
As I told the guys on @HOT97: I’ve always backed the underdog—probably because I come from a long line of them.
My family came here as refugees from Armenia, beating incredible odds just to survive. When I was six, my great aunt Vera sat me down and said, “A lot of people sacrificed everything to get you here. Make it count.”
That moment shaped me forever; no pressure, Aunt Vera! 😅
If anything is to be learned from Pep Guardiola's divorce it is that marriage in today's society doesn't benefit a man
Think about this, Pep's wife isn't divorcing him because he cheated or abused her in any way, but because he loves his job which provides her and the family a comfortable love
If Pep didn't dedicate himself to knowing football, the very money that she is demanding from their divorce settlement (half his wealth) wouldn't be there
Think about this, if Pep wasn't to dedicate himself to being the very best coach in the world, he would have never been hired by the top clubs and paid big money. Meaning he wouldn't be able to provide her the good life
Would she have loved to be with a Pep who is with her 24/7 but broke? Definitely NO. But such is the stupidity of modern women, driven by their narcissistic nature that only cares about their feelings regardless of the man's sacrifices

Reading up on @DAcemogluMIT: We were both born in 1967, a month apart, and immigrated to the West for school. His mom was the principal of an Armenian school in Istanbul. Same here (but in Beirut)! His likely last name in Armenian = Ajemian, my mom's maiden name. What’s going on?
Wow! @DAcemogluMIT, born in Istanbul to Armenian parents, shares the @NobelPrize in Economics. Congratulations Daron! So happy for the nation of Armenia 🇦🇲 to have some good news to celebrate.
Imagine the historic part of your hometown, which was captured a year ago, being destroyed as part of a state policy, and no one is even talking about it. That's what's happening to Stepanakert, and all the people who've made their living from the conflict for decades are silent.
