Thrilled to share our paper in @pnas.org!
"Neural synchrony links sensorimotor cortices in a network for facial motor control" https://t.co/mSOtYOntyn
with @GeenaIanni (co-first), @rassi_elie, Rouse AG, Schieber MH, Yazdani F, @PrutYifat, Freiwald WA.
also thanks to Bridget Waller and Jamie Whitehouse for their astute commentary, to our Reviewers who made the paper so, so much better, and to all the copy-editors who fixed my horrible, no good grammar
Control over the many small muscles that create facial expressions—a key communication channel in primates—comes from the neural circuitry that produces voluntary movements, according to new Science research in macaques.
The findings suggest facial expressions are more than a reflexive “readout” of emotions, as has been often thought, but are also produced by higher-level cortical neural systems of intentional control. https://t.co/bn69FPvowq
@yurivazu I'm also thankful for fantastic mentorship -- @PrutYifat (a one stop shop, true jack of all trades scientist) and my twitterless advisor Winrich Freiwald (who r/o to me with this crazy idea almost ten years ago) !!!
I'm so thankful for fantastic teamwork -- @yurivazu (co-first), check her PNAS paper on how these regions interact to form a unified, flexible network, there's a v cool causal manipulation, Fig 3, which confirms her network ephys, so rare in primate work!
NIH indirect costs fund the backbone of research: maintaining labs, ensuring safety, and supporting admin work. These are essential for groundbreaking discoveries. Drastic cuts to NIH indirect rates are detrimental to academic biomedical research.
This approach to suddenly cutting @NIH grant indirect costs will cause chaos and harm biomedical research and researchers in hospitals, schools and institutes nationwide. A sane government would never do this.
