Paper bags from the grocery store were the only proper material to cover a book. Even if you bought book covers from the stationery store, they were inferior in every way. See how deep the flap extends into the covers? Those pre-made covers would offer about 2 inches max, causing them to fall off every time you opened the book. They included a design that looked horrible if your book wasn't the precise size the creator envisioned. Paper bags were a blank canvas. You could do anything you wanted. Draw on it, add stickers, glue stuff to it. The sky's the limit.
