Hybrid neural–cognitive models reveal how memory shapes human reward learning
This paper shows that human reward learning cannot be fully explained by simple reinforcement learning models based only on gradually updated reward values.
Using a large human decision-making dataset, the authors built hybrid neural–cognitive models that combine interpretable cognitive models with neural networks. They found that people use richer and more flexible memory representations of past experiences than standard Q-learning models assume.
Overall, the study suggests that reward-based learning depends not only on scalar reward predictions, but also on complex memory of past actions, rewards, and context.

Happy to share the news! 🎉 I had the pleasure of collaborating on this new article that delves into the gating mechanism of mechanosensitive ion channels OSCA1.2 using unnatural amino acid photo-crosslinking. Hope you like it! https://t.co/kQOmrwTyAE @Vrid_Unab
Thrilled to share the publication of my PhD thesis! Using AAV9 to deliver a Zinc Finger–VP64 ATF at birth, we restored hippocampal PSD95 levels and improved memory and motor learning in HD mice—combining behavioral, molecular, and spine analyses. #HuntingtonsDisease, #Epigenetics
