@patrickbrownont These estimates are exaggerations. The actual number of casualties are estimated around 5,000 which is far too low for a war of that magnitude. Would you allow IRA statues to be erected in Brampton ? Similarly, Sri Lanka does not allow commemoration of separatists /sympathizers.

@charith9 @Neetwit Sabri doesn't act like a moderate lately. He has been given a national list spot from the alliance which won 150 seats mainly from the Sinhalese community. The movement represented Sinhalese nationalism. Sabri would probably have lost if he contested with his current slogans.

@AndreaHorwath The separatist movement is still active around the world. Having lost the arms struggle, they are eyeing to establish a separate state through international recognition. Canadian recognition of an alleged genocide will help them prove their case for self determination.

@AndreaHorwath Independence struggle in northern Ireland aims to unify the northern part of the island with the southern part(larger) of the island...... In contrast , Tamil separatism aims to remove the north of Sri Lanka from the south and merge it with south Indian state of Tamil Nadu.

@AndreaHorwath IRA struggle to free northern Ireland from Britain might be helpful for one to understand the separatist movement in Sri Lanka. IRA claim for independence appears to bear more legitimacy than the LTTE claim for a separate state. Yet, they waged a ruthless war on civilians.
