That is the civic lesson I most want our son to inherit. Disagreement inside a shared commitment to the republic is a good thing. Loving a country does not require believing it is always right. Patriotism without criticism becomes nationalism, and criticism without attachment makes the common enterprise impossible to sustain. The distinction Brazil unwittingly taught me is that civic education should cultivate loyalty to the constitutional order, not to the people who temporarily control it. Sometimes, in fact, remaining true to the first requires challenging the second.

With the news that the Pope does not need any adjuvant treatment we hope that November’s Lung Cancer Awareness Month will help us redouble our efforts to prevent tobacco use and help smokers quit; expand access to low-dose computed tomography screening for those at risk; ensure prompt diagnosis and access to modern treatments; and recognize that lung cancer isn’t exclusively a smoker’s disease. No one deserves lung cancer, whatever their smoking history. Patients need compassion, not judgment, and access to advances that can save their lives.
