The FCC makes media ownership rules.
The FCC makes media ownership rules.
The FCC makes media ownership rules.
(Rupert Murdoch owns broadcast media. The FCC could block him from owning Fox local stations and WSJ and NY Post and Fox cable and Fox sports. #GoodFCCTakes)
By 1969, black people owned fewer than 12 radio outlets. Consolidation hasn't helped that either. The National Association of Broadcasters last year argued that the FCC shouldn't even be allowed to consider race when evaluating media ownership rules.
Right. Does the Murdoch family meet the character standard required to own TV and radio broadcast stations, given what we know about intentional lies on Fox News?
The FCC is being asked to hold a hearing to answer this.
(They have subpoena power.)

@FCC@FOX29philly Owning a broadcast station is more than a business—it is a public trust. Rupert Murdoch & FOX have undermined that trust by manipulating its audience & knowingly broadcasting false news about the 2020 election.

This petition is a #GoodFCCTake.
The Reagan admin expanded the number of news outlets Rupert Murdoch should own. It is DEFINITELY in the public interest to consider whether someone who knowingly aired lies should hold broadcast licenses.
@rehundt has been on this recently!
@granick@barryfriedman1 Mikey worked hard to save up enough to repay the loan to launch his brother.
Also, Uncle Carmine probably needed to launder some money.
Also, wish we learned more about donut king's drama w/ the designer. He wasn't into Syd.

@FCC@JRosenworcelFCC Where is the action to revert the pro-corporate ownership rule change implemented by the Trump FCC and litigated in Prometheus v. FCC?
@GoodFCCTakes@Leahgreenb@ezralevin@j_littlewood@asmith83 https://t.co/OjZoFjS69S
The Catholic Diocese was airing Alex Jones locally & in the NYC area. A local man in Sacto called the Bishop and read him the riot act, asking why the Church is supporting such lies!? Presto, one week later Jones was booted from both stations.
Funny... 2/
@GoodFCCTakes@Leahgreenb@ezralevin@j_littlewood@asmith83 Many Christian stations air Alex Jones. World Wide Christian Radio (WWCR) still does.
The list of radio stations at https://t.co/ltGhp5x2ox has not been updated recently, so check your local websites. ONLY LOCAL people have standing to complain, but everyone can write WWCR.
@LucyFro@1440KEYSAM Send a copy to the General Manager & Program director of that radio station. Also to your local newspaper &/or write an oped.
Why put Alex Jones, an admitted Psychotic who harmed innocent grieving parents of Sandy Hook children on the air? Just stop.

@jmhaigh@matthewstoller And it was a civil suit. Still, there was a jury finding about speech.
The Supreme Court is a major problem, but the only way to fix it is force it to make pretzel decisions and use them to highlight its illegitimacy.
"The [Trump] FCC's analysis" on media consolidation was a mess. -FCC commish
Let's fix this, fix our media -> get @gigibsohn
confirmed and give Rosenworcel and the Biden FCC the power to improve our media.
#Murdoch
@1JasonLutz@RonFilipkowski No. But the FCC under Trump did act to allow media corporations to suck up more broadcast media.
We should reverse this media consolidation. More here:

@GoodFCCTakes
@caqjd@JoeBiden@ACLU@FCC Hi there!
@caqjd look at anti-consolidation in media. A big part of the problem with US cable news is that it's controlled by a few huge corporations.
The FCC won't break up cable networks, but the FTC and @JusticeATR (DOJ anti-trust) can act. @matthewstoller@GoodFCCTakes
"One reason [the US DOJ sued to] break up AT&T is that the @FCC said it was too big to regulate."
It feels like we are there with Comcast/NBC/MSNBC, AT&T/CNN, and Fox Corp/News Corp/Fox.
Cable news is run by a handful of huge corporations that are getting too big to regulate.
1. This @TonyRomm and @yjtorbati piece is an excellent story on how monopolists like Live Nation cheat government programs. One reason we broke up AT&T is because in the 1970s the FCC said it was too big to regulate. That is a pervasive problem now with an economy of monopolies.
The FCC's approach to media consolidation needs a dramatic overhaul that puts diversity—working class and minority communities—front and center. - FCC commish.
Getting Gigi Sohn approved will give the FCC the power to do this overhaul. That's why Big Media is fighting her.
Here we are again. For the 4th time, a federal court told the FCC that we can't relax our limits on media consolidation without analyzing the impact on diversity. The FCC's approach needs a dramatic overhaul that puts diversity front and center - and it is time to start now.
More @GoodFCCTakes here.
The FCC has power to improve our media and public discourse. Why isn't Biden figuring out ways to get Sohn into the seat and complete the FCC? These are options they do have.
To stop threading this with Sohn specifically. Why do so many Ds focus on things that are not going to happen bcause they lack votes, like filibuster reform, but won't look at options they do have, like recess appointments?
