you should start many books and complete few
you should buy books on a whim, when possible
you shouldn't even know the whole contents of your own shelves. If you create a home library it should act as one: It is there for you to discover and rediscover, to get lost in.
This is an extraordinary edit, but it carries a dangerous flaw that speaks to the times.
The Indo-European people have a fundamental fork in the road to navigate as regards to Power. And this edit glorifies the wrong path.
The ancient Aryan peoples wrote extensively on the sources of Power. And if one reads the old scriptures as histories rather than parable this is abundantly clear.
Power comes from two fundamental places:
Connection with Divinity,
and Denial of Divinity.
This edit postulates that the historical root of Indo-European power was Denial of Divinity. And it suggests that the future root should also be this, including genetic editing technology.
The trouble is this:
The ancient histories make the same point again and again. Technological development that is not grounded in Spiritual truth leads to defeat, not victory.
While this is attractive to the modern mind, the fact that it attractive is due to a long campaign of demoralization, wherein technology is propped up as our only path to Power.
This is a trap.
The desired outcome expressed in this edit is good. But this edit is accidentally subversive in that it glorifies a path that will end in failure.
I’m not just saying this to be a hater. I’ve followed the fellow and look forward to discourse on the topic.
@Austen My grandma made chicken and veg in broth over rice as our standard meal. Every night my Poppop would rave about how good we eat. I miss that meal 😭 my husband hates it so I don’t make it often.
@hostagehoosier We just call these “temporary toys”. They get thrown away at night. Started this when they were like 2/3. No fussing about it.
Occasionally they’ll really want to keep one and I’ll let them for a little longer. They always get bored of it in a day or 2 and it disappears no prob
@dvorstone I would agree with your assessment for actual romance novels. Erotica is equivalent to porn. I stay far away from it now but in my teen years and 20s I read that stuff for the same reason men watch porn.
It used to be mostly on the internet. Now’s it’s invaded the book stores.
@Aprilfzws@PeacemakingSt care of each other. It is perfectly natural to share a house with family. It’s not a burden or shameful to need their support and return the help in other ways.
@Aprilfzws@PeacemakingSt I hate this argument. If you have a strong family, you have something better to “fall back on” than an independent career. What brother/sister/parent/cousin wouldn’t step up for you if you were trapped in an abusive relationship. We end the shame around allowing family to take…
An IRL friend pointed out to me that the elites of each country are trying to build their own AI systems the way ancient kingdoms constructed their own pantheons of gods. Consider the reverential and mystical way they talk about AI, like it's a being rather then a mere technology, how they believe it will bring them military victory, economic dominance, and even favorable weather. Notice how they are willing to make massive, irrational sacrifices to gain access to it. Kind of makes you suspect the same forces behind paganism are playing the same old song on a new instrument.
Stoicism was meant for men living in a house with 3 generations of deranged Mediterranean mamacitas and it makes a lot of sense in that context.
If you’re a Northern European you’re plenty stoic, it’s fine. It’s for people with hot blood.
The joy of owning beautiful things, a good knife, a proper linen towel, a jar of excellent honey, one soul encapsulating perfume, over many mediocre things. Doing this slowly across every domain.
@heynavtoor Harbouring the notion that AI is conscious shows how stunted the consciousness of the observer/tester is. Ascribing consciousness to man-made objects has been the root of idolatry since ancient times and still playing out today.
