🚨BREAKING: Akwa Ibom Police have reportedly arrested Dr. Benjamin Smith, Obidient Movement Coordinator, at the State Command in Ikot Akpan Abia.

He went with supporters to secure the release of OK Movement coordinator @ElijahNoah8 and others picked up earlier in Uyo, after police cancelled their Independence Day march for Obi/Kwankwaso and tear-gassed supporters.

The man who went to bail the detained is now detained.

Why is it always the opposition the Nigerian Police harass? When was an APC march last tear-gassed? Is this still a democracy?

The National Universities Commission released a public notice on 26 February 2026, titled Guidelines for the Award and Use of Honorary Doctorate Degrees in Nigeria. The Commission directed that recipients of honourary doctorates are not permitted to address themselves or be addressed as “Dr”. The notice reads in part:

“Recipients may use the approved nomenclature after their names, such as Doctor of Law (Honoris Causa), LL.D. (h.c.), or https://t.co/b2AL4yLd5C. (h.c.). They are not permitted to use “Dr.”, which is reserved for holders of earned degrees and medical professionals. They also may not use the honorary degree to practise as scholars or professionals, oversee administrative units, or supervise research.”

At a meeting of the Federal Executive Council chaired by President Bola Tinubu on 30 April 2026, the Federal Government approved a national policy barring individuals who received honorary degrees from adding “Dr” before their names in any setting, be it official, academic, or professional.

Addressing yourself as “Dr” Stephen Akintayo when your highest academic qualification is a Bachelor's in Microbiology from Olabisi Onabanjo University misrepresents an honourary degree as an earned credential.

And as the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, said in his press briefing on the 6th of May 2026, “Recipients (of honourary doctorates) shall not prefix doctor to their names in official, academic or professional usage,” the minister said, adding, “Misrepresentation of honorary degrees as earned academic credentials shall be considered academic fraud and subject to legal and reputational consequences.”
