@Stsantek Because they have a plurality in enough of the country that they don’t need to pretend to be other than they are. We all live in Tower Hamlets now.
While 2% of the British public trust developers to make old places better with new development & with most modern designs consistently unpopular with large majorities of the population across every social demographic, the politics of development will remain brutal. Beauty is part of the path to falling back in love with the future as …
@aljhlester@ShipleyWrites If ‘indigenous’ is loaded with all this additional baggage, is there another term that simply means ‘people native to a particular place’?
@residentadviser In a world where a large and growing majority of the population are net recipients, isn’t this a vote-winner? Only the tax paying minority suffer from this.
I want every family to have fun this summer. That's why I’m cutting VAT on children’s activities and meals with Great British Summer Savings.
Our economic plan is the right one, to support families and businesses, and build a stronger and more secure Britain.
@rorymeakin He overtook, on the left, a moving car that was signalling left. Had the driver failed to check his left mirror he would be dead. Why would a sane person make such a bet?
I speak as a lifetime cyclist who has recently (having been displaced from London) had to learn to drive.
@rorymeakin This is obviously a completely insane way to cycle. He should have taken primary position behind the BMW, even though that would have meant slowing slightly.
@SimpGanassi I liked all three of them very much. Two of three were even born here. None of them were stabby or actively antisocial. But I do wonder if this was the best use of scarce Westminster property, while others commute for hours to work.
@SimpGanassi I don’t know any now. But we used to be friendly with a woman who did under-the-table childcare from her zone 1 flat, having never worked in her adult life. And a couple next door who retired quite early to enjoy free university courses while living in a £700k flat in Pimlico.
@lb_southwark People are mocking you, but Southwark cannot afford to support another 77 benefit claimants, mostly foreign-born, and no amount of market-rate housing would have made that worthwhile. So you have my support.
@TypeForVictory I don’t see the logic of providing company housing for nurses and policemen (unless they’re on call). If pay isn’t sufficient to attract and retain them, then it’s better to raise salaries rather then disguise it with benefits in kind.
@landofangle You *could* make an argument for concreting outer London to house the English. But what makes you believe the second part of that would happen? I’ve become a reluctant NIMBY on the basis that any new housing will instantly be filled with people who shouldn’t be here at all.
