I shudder to think that one week ago she was in a kill pen. Praying that the neglect and stress this poor mare has suffered is not too much for her foal to overcome. She’s a daughter of Pleasantly Perfect and granddaughter of Mineshaft. Shame on whoever bred her then threw two lives away like garbage. Please help with a donation if you can.
Can someone help me understand why the auction house are not held accountable for neglect or cruelty when they have animals like this FOR SALE. What am I missing? Is it because they have water and access to food - therefore this can’t be considered neglect? These auction houses are a huge problem and it seems they should be better regulated. They’re basically the livestock mafia. (This is NOT a TB)

They didn’t make headlines this week and for whatever reason nobody seemed to think their lives mattered.
But their lives and the two lives growing inside of them mattered to us.
So quietly and without any fanfare a group of wonderful souls who didn’t want anything but to help them got together to save them.
And after days and days languishing in the Bowie kill pen these two sweet souls passed through the gates here at The Bridge shortly after noon today and into a life where they’ll always be safe and never suffer again.
Everyone, meet Beryl (JC: Vintage Beauty) and her BFF Amy (JC: Perfect Art).
My sister helped in the naming these kind ladies. Beryl was my Nana’s name and I think my tiny red-headed grandmother would have been so honored to share her name. Her nickname was Babe.
Our vet came and drew blood, examined them both and found them to be in better shape than they looked. Amy has a cough but no fever and both have cuts absolutely everywhere. They’re very pregnant but babies don’t seem to be imminent, thank God.
And both girls are exhausted. I have never had one show up so clearly exhausted. They nibbled on hay most of the afternoon, drank a lot of fresh water, rolled in fresh bedding and ate what was probably their first (small) meal in a very long time. And then they dozed together in the early evening breeze, probably wondering if they’d wake up from this dream.
I will be telling them forever that this is their happily ever after, I hope before too long they’ll believe me.
Since yesterday we haven’t received any donations toward our June hay fundraiser and our total raised stands at $1,430, $4,570 from goal. Additionally we added a $664 vet bill for the girls, we pulled blood and both will start antibiotics because they both have elevated WBC counts.
Will you help us get to goal for June and pay the girls vet bill? We’d be so grateful.
(p.s. we have some big changes coming here at the Bridge soon… it’s going to be amazing for everyone, stay tuned!)

Aftercare is not an afterthought.
The Sport of Kings should not tolerate the cruel culling of broodmares into kill pens. These two mares, both bred and apparently pregnant (including a KY-bred), literally gave life to the sport. This week they were saved from slaughter.

I just got into town for @TheNYRA ‘s Belmont Festival at Saratoga. First person I see is the ‘Treeshaker’ @TomAmossRacing He’s always been a Friend first, but professionally I’ve always been proud of what he’s done on TV with @FOXSports and their Belmont coverage. Privileged to have seen his talent early on when I worked with him at TVG. Speaking of, it’s ’Class Reunion Week’ here ! @SJBray will be joining the team on America’s Day at the Races on @FOXSports 1 & 2, Fri. & Sat. One of his shifts will be with me & @andyserling I’ll start tomorrow, Thursday at 2:25pm ET, hope you’ll find time to watch 🤓
Some examples from two dealers who currently have many in their hands hence why it is vital to re-home to appropriate buyers.
Two well known dealers who time & time again are reported to the authorities but continually are offered castoffs.
How about the @TheJockeyClub being the custodian of a registry of owners/ stables that dump Thoroughbreds at feed lots or ship to slaughter or have been convicted of a crime against an equine? As an impartial participant, the registry would be maintained. Those owners or stables that have hurt a horse or dumped them for slaughter would be permanently banned from all our professional sales of horses either in person or by proxy. They should be banned from attending any sale. Those who abuse a horse or prove to be untrustworthy forfeit the privilege of owning one of these majestic animals.
Let’s hear from our professionals: @claibornefarm@HillnDaleFarm@spendthriftfarm@LanesEndFarms@westpointtbred@TheNYRA@theTDN@tbracingnetwork and anyone I missed.
@Linda29461 We agree. We would also like to see all members participating in the racing & breeding industry who have been convicted of equine welfare crimes to receive a permanent ban from future industry participation. The case we assisted in involved an industry participant w/a conviction.
"Every time a Thoroughbred ends up in a kill pen, the industry loses credibility. It doesn’t matter whether the horse was owned by a breeder, trainer, partnership, racing stable, or private individual."
