This study demonstrates that GLP-1 and GLP-1/GIP agonists favorably reshape body composition. The meta-analysis shows significant reductions in fat mass and visceral adipose tissue with relative preservation of lean mass, directly addressing concerns about excessive muscle loss.

🚨 BREAKING @EliLillyandCo NEWS:
$LLY will release animal study data for at QUINTUPLE AGONIST at #ADA2026
For reference:
Tirzepatide = GLP1/GIP
Retatrutide = GLP1/GIP/Glucagon
New Mol = GLP1/GIP/Glucagon/Amylin/Calcitonin
Early rat studies outperformed retatrutide!
On the cover of the Bulletin of @AmCollSurgeons month 🙌
Hernia repair isn’t one-size-fits-all—and personalized surgery matters.

GLP-1 receptor agonists are increasingly used to treat type 2 diabetes and obesity, and trials have shown reductions in cardiovascular risk and slowing of kidney failure. Adverse events are mostly gastrointestinal.

16.3% body weight loss. From a daily pill. No injection needed.
@EliLillyandCo's orforglipron just beat oral semaglutide head-to-head in a 1,698-person Phase 3 trial published in @TheLancet. Better blood sugar control. Better weight loss. Taken daily like an aspirin.
Millions of patients qualify for Wegovy or Mounjaro but won't self-inject weekly. Needle anxiety. Supply shortages. Insurance fights. Orforglipron eliminates all three barriers.
The @US_FDA decides in April 2026. If approved, it's the first oral GLP-1 for obesity.
But Lilly isn't alone:
@pfizer: danuglipron (oral, twice-daily)
@Roche: CT-388 (oral, once-daily)
@Amgen: MariTide (monthly injection)
@Viking_VKTX: VK2735 (oral + injectable)
Five companies racing to turn a weekly injection into a morning pill.
Interesting preclinical work on tirzepatide and atherosclerosis. Turns out it shifts macrophages from the pro-inflammatory M1 phenotype toward anti-inflammatory M2, and blunts oxLDL-driven plaque progression. This is separate from weight loss. One more signal that dual GIP/GLP-1 agonism may protect the vasculature directly. https://t.co/i2H8l8Qs5i
It’s a great general surgery meeting when the first session has #hernias as two of the four talks. 💪
First up is Dr @HWongMD@USCGenSurg and a great presentation by his medical student Sachin Reddi at @KeckMedicineUSC .
Key takeaway: inguinal hernia repair in the obese has its risks, but it seemed interestingly not that bad: 1.5% higher risk of complications with each BMI unit increase from 30kg/m2. That’s a great data point to use when calculating risk in obese patients.

📢 If you're paying attention to body composition changes with #weightloss or #GLP1s, you need to read this article from @GrantTinsleyPhD

👉Fat-free mass ≠ Lean mass ≠ lean soft tissue mass ≠ skeletal muscle mass
👉Fat contains fat-free mass
👉DEXA and BIA cannot tell us about skeletal muscle mass
As anti-obesity medications (AOMs) grow in popularity, what does this mean for metabolic and bariatric surgery, the other highly effective weight-loss option? 💉
Experts weigh in on how to combine the two approaches to maximize patient outcomes. https://t.co/s6Z9xBGgZY
I hope @ABOMcert question writers and review courses for the exam are paying attention since this relationship (top panel) has been part of curricula for years
I've been musing on the #biotech race for Most #WeightLoss
Maybe it is motivated by vanity or $, but I consider it a necessary goal
👉We need to create options for people with class 4 #obesity (BMI>50)
Our current #medicines largely cause weight loss by ⬇️food intake and we can only suppress appetite so much. Tirzepatide MIGHT modulate fat metabolism (hand waves): 🐁 https://t.co/93ZeHay54P
https://t.co/4tNTOrx6WA
What we need are more peripherally-acting agents that increase energy utilization from adipocytes
🧬 NEW STUDY: Obesity’s Massive Health Impact--from my research group, led by the brilliant @yao_zhiqi.
- - -
🚨 In a nationwide study of 270,000+ adults using the All of Us Research Program, obesity was linked to a higher risk of 16 health conditions—with risk increasing by obesity severity (BMI ≥30).
📊 Top Takeaways
• 42.4% of U.S. adults have obesity; 9.8% have class III (BMI ≥40)
• Class III obesity was linked to:
🔹 11x higher risk of Obstructive Sleep Apnea
🔹 7.7x higher risk of Type 2 Diabetes
🔹 6.7x higher risk of Fatty Liver Disease
🔹 3.5x higher risk of Heart Failure
❤️🩹 51.5% of Obstructive Sleep Apnea cases in the population could be attributed to obesity. Similar trends were seen for T2D, gout, and fatty liver disease (MASLD).
💊 As anti-obesity medications like semaglutide and tirzepatide reshape treatment, understanding obesity’s full burden is crucial for prevention and policy.
🔍 This is one of the largest and most diverse obesity studies ever conducted in the U.S., reinforcing obesity as a root cause—not just a risk factor.

Happy to share our post hoc analysis of SURMOUNT trials examining tirzepatide for #obesity based on reproductive stage (pre, peri, post #menopause)
https://t.co/N8XCnVqnLv
👉Menopause was not explicitly captured in the trials but we approximated status with a variety of inputs
👉No difference in #weightloss outcomes based on stage
👉Tirzepatide appears effective for weight loss regardless of stage
👉Clear improvement observed in waist to height ratio compared to placebo
