ONE NATION, ONE ELECTION: CENTRE MULLS HOLDING ASSEMBLY POLLS IN 22 STATES ALONG WITH 2029 LOK SABHA POLLS
SHOEB HABIB
NEW DELHI: In a major push towards 'One Nation, One Election', the Central government is reportedly considering holding Assembly elections in 22 NDA-ruled states and Union Territories along with the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.
According to sources, the government is exploring an option to curtail the tenure of some state Assemblies to synchronize them with the General Elections.
States whose names are doing the rounds include Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, among others.
Sources said the proposal is currently under consideration and no final decision has been taken yet. Consultations with the Law Commission and the Election Commission of India are underway.
It is to be noted that 'One Nation, One Election' has been one of the key poll promises of the BJP, aimed at reducing election expenditure and ensuring governance continuity.
