Tony Davies, Vice-chair of Nature Friendly Farming Network in Wales & an upland livestock farmer. His passion for nature-based farming is evident. Loved this quote: 'Since going nature-based, I'm getting bitten all over by insects while cutting hay again - which is wonderful!

Extreme weather and its impact on farming viability in Wales
@farmlytics report - https://t.co/YQe7qAgiMF
Global temps are rising, but even at 1.5°C rise, we’ll see more drastic climate extremes. Flood, storms & drought, unseasonal weather, warmer winters. We are now breaking records all the time!
Farming livelihoods are being impacted by all of this.
The biggest risk to food systems is climate change, even bigger are the impacts on our soils to produce food, and to hold water.
The report tells us it’s costing farmers 10s of millions of £s a year in livestock losses, extra feeds being bought in often from deforested areas, restricted grass growth, restricted water & soil loss. Farmers are feeling it hard, this is increasingly the norm.
The report tells us the regenerative farmers, are proving to be more resilient.
Our climate breakdown is having a significant impact on household food bills, impacting those suffering poverty the worst.
“30% of Wales’s population is struggling to put food on their plates.” - @ktfoodpalmer@foodsensewales
This is potentially the first year without a harvest. One farmer having to buy in £20,000 worth of feed stock…
The Sustainable Farming Scheme #SFS offers the greatest chance to reduce these impacts.
Increase appropriate tree cover wherever water collects @CoedCadw #HedgesAndEdges
https://t.co/TdiUlprdfh
Increase #agroforestry, cover crops, mixed farming, grass diversity in pastures, investing in farm infrastructure, rain water harvesting, slurry storage capacity, all are now vital.
There is little value in the food supply chain as low as 5% for the farmer - this has to change! @derekwalker_
We have to slow the flow, and hold water naturally for longer on the land, when the rains are there, to enable viable productivity later - a whole range of benefits to the farm business, the public, and nature. @IoloWilliams2

The Welsh government's plans to have 10% tree cover on all farms has riled many in the farming community. But how bad (or good) might it really be? 👇 👇 @NFUCymru@clacymru@TFACymru@WoodlandTrust @CoedCadw @NFFNUK https://t.co/pajXZZhIyL
📢 Today we unveil our 2024 manifesto 📢

I’m fed up with misreporting of the Welsh Sustainable Farming Scheme.
We can’t afford to play farming off against nature recovery: the two go together.
Glad @PrivateEyeNews printed my letter to correct the record.
@DoddsJane@AbiReader@NFUCymru@FUW_UAC I am confused, is there a Lib Dem motion to scrap the SFS? A few lines from your 2021 manifesto below. The full document: https://t.co/fhmehes2XF
We need a scheme that can reward us for these meadows which we have nurtured for decades under previous Environmental schemes. Farmers in Wales have put together an open letter to the Welsh Government on the Sustainable Farming Scheme. Sign now https://t.co/OOhJSrVgz7
More productive profitable habitat fields on Channel 4 news: https://t.co/PxmrbpaOTF Our hedges are only trimmed every 3 years saving £100s annually @NFFNUK
Harvesting habitat land last summer, no fert for 15 years. This land can continue to produce sustainable profitable lamb and mutton for generations if SFS habitat payments are financially sufficient. @NFFNUK
Examples of habitats on our farm 🌱 They all play a vital role in supporting food production 🐑🐄 Having 10% habitat on a farm doesn’t mean taking land out of production ❌ Same applies to 🌳 SFS isn’t perfect but please remember this when responding to the consultation 🙏
Excellent summary that addresses the misconception that the two SFS 10% rules means taking 20% of land out of production 👏 It’s a lot more nuanced than that. SFS still needs work, but when debating and protesting it’s so important to get our facts right 👍
🗓️The #SFS consultation, setting out our current proposals for future farm support after 2025, remains open until 7 March.
👂We’ve listened before and made changes.
🔎All views will continue to be given serious consideration.

Many #Farmers earnestly support the desire to make nature-friendly farming the standard across Wales 🚜
That being said, the @WelshGovernment must sit down and listen to the concerns of farmers over the Sustainable Farming Scheme.
Wales's Sustainable Farming Scheme is coming in for a lot of stick at the mo. ⬇️ worth a read from @SoilAssociation. Highlights multiple challenges facing farming & how the new Scheme can/must play a key role in supporting Welsh ag transition to a sustainable future.
