@jjl8813@jdcmedlock It's one of those things that's *obviously* true which is then exclusively used stupidly
Why do Republicans always insist that no matter how low tax rates go, we must still be on the right side of the curve??
@interro_9 We lie badly to kids when we imply that a career is like a marriage. That the goal is to only have one. That hasn't been realistic for decades. I know few boomers that have had only one career
We should have taught them this instead (from the incomparable @ZachWeiner):
@Noahpinion Seems like a very strong sign that "software generation" is a tiny part of the business.
It's so easy to make twitter it's sometimes an interview question
@izzyz Calling consciousness an illusion is like that old saw about the true author of the Iliad not being Homer, but a different author of the same name.
Okay, then why does the illusion work in such a way that produces qualia
@the_yanco I think a good place to start is understand why some governments are broadly good for humanity and some aren't.
The United States is far smarter and more powerful than I am, why does it treat its citizens better than ancient egypt did?
@omarluqq@theantipk@xereeto This isn't a new debate. "Everything is conscious" is probably more compatible with physicalism than brain juice makes consciousness. It has the advantage of being simpler.
I'm not even talking about "I don't know with absolute certainty".
We don't have any idea at all
@omarluqq@theantipk@xereeto Arent you the one making the positive claim?
If there was a thing called "znoot" and you were pretty sure that cows had "znoot" what should you say when asked if rocks had "znoot"?
Anything other than "I don't know" is obviously indefensible.
@thomasmetcalf@ClickingSeason What could possibly qualify as evidence if the question is unfalsifiable in the first place.
That's core to the definition of "evidence" that there exists some fact that can be determined which would show that consciousness is not present
@Bobbie_Westside@mattyglesias I would be fascinated.
Anyone going out with me is a lefty weirdo, so one that ALSO thinks Art of the Deal is their favorite book is about to say some deeply interesting stuff
@arindube I'm not convinced LLMs are conscious or have welfare.
If I wasn't a human I don't know how you'd convince me humans are conscious or have welfare.
If you could describe a falsifiable test, in advance, that would change your mind, I'd be inclined to take your musings seriously
@scottlincicome Really, really hate reporting a component of a net number as a fraction of the total.
Like measuring the takeoff of a 0.5g rocket and then claiming "the 1.5g of thrust accounts for 300% of acceleration!"
@philipmathews51@biggsag It excludes a few things that actually underrate millennial wealth. The value accrued in a DB plan is pretty low at millennial/GenZ age, and retirement plans are far more common today
DB plans peaked at 38% of private sector jobs nearly 50 years ago, when boomers were 25ish
@philipmathews51@biggsag This turns out to be untrue. Both the median and average millennial has more wealth than the median and average boomer did at their age.
Gen Z has even more wealth than both!
(Yes the numbers are inflation adjusted)
@hecubian_devil If a bunch of people want this it's okay. They're allowed to want stuff that you don't like. It's allowed to be common. I bet you anything my records will still exist. I bet you anything you will be able to buy records.
@hecubian_devil The only problem with this is that none of it is true. DVDs still exist. I own a record player. It is never been easier for me to get a record. It has never been easier for anyone to get a record
Spotify existing has not forced me into it
Are more bookstores opening or closing?
@literally_chad Trump didn't prove that the rules didn't matter. He proved extra publicity is helps more than breaking the rules hurts
In other words, "Attention is all you need"
@boulahouech@signulll The problem is that "bullshit job" is actually defined as "a job David Graeber" doesn't understand.
We should wonder why corpos would hate money so much as to generate that many bullshit jobs.
More likely Graeber doesn't know literally everything about everything
