Big Sur, California.
Today we drove from Monterey to Cambria, except there's one major problemโ the entire highway is closed south of Big Sur with no detour and no alternate route.
We chose to drive the mountain roads instead.
After visiting Big Sur, we backtracked up to Monterey, and took the Caramel Valley out to the interstate. We found vast vineyards there, stretching to the horizon. They were immense.
I found a single road detour back from the interstate to the coast (called the Nacimiento-Fergusson Road). It is the ONLY road across the entire mountain range, totaling ~50mi with mountain switchbacks and steep cliffs, with part of it running through an active US Army training area. We didn't see any activity, but the road is commonly closed for tank, artillery, and other firing exercises. The coastal descent has over 100 switchback. Wikipedia says "the road is steep, winding, sometimes only wide enough for one vehicle, and has precipitous drops".
This road made Glacier National Park's Going-to-the-Sun Road look like a cake walk. At least the National Park had guardrails ๐ I do not recommend this route if you don't have a large appetite for cliff driving.
Another day for the history books.
A fascinating, albeit rambling, editorial. For the record, the referenced quotes were cherry-picked from a verbal address delivered at the county board of supervisors meeting. At no point did anyone ever use the word 'elites' or 'elitists' during that address. That quote is fabricated. Not sure why you based your thesis on something that was never said. Also, not sure why "Carmel" was placed in quotes, I assume it was to highlight the fact that I don't live in Carmel proper. Another misquote, as I clearly claimed my correct native 'hood at the beginning of the speech. I never 'told' the Mercury anything, as neither they nor any publication contacted me before printing my address. Generally 'know-it-all' is accompanied by some form of correction, which you fail to do. If my observations were 'silly' they would not have echoed around the globe, and you would not have dedicated your entire editorial to refuting them. But thank you... for further amplifying the message in the PineCone, where my three sentences easily eclipse your entire essay.
