It is deeply concerning that Union Minister @KirenRijiju continues to publicly mischaracterise my brother Sharjeel @_imaams speech as a call for the secession of Assam from India. Sharjeel’s case has consistently been that he was speaking of a chakka jam, a road blockade as a form of protest, not cessation or secession from India. These very speeches and their legal interpretation are sub judice, and there is no final judicial finding that Sharjeel advocated secession. At a particularly crucial stage, when arguments on framing of charges in FIR 59/2020 are underway, such categorical public pronouncements by a senior Union Minister risk prejudicing the atmosphere surrounding an ongoing criminal trial and impinge upon Sharjeel’s right to a fair trial. I request Mr. Rijiju to allow the courts to decide the evidence and law, and not defame my brother or prejudge his case for political gain.

Though Udhay didn’t say it directly, he left room for a double-meaning joke. It was obvious; I ain’t even gonna defend that. It was crass and cheap. File a 100 Cr defamation suit, drag him. But arresting him for that? And TVK cadre is protesting for this?😭😭

@sai_balaguru The meaning could be anything honestly. And thats exactly why he should've been mature, especially involving women. I believe he just wanted to be witty and casually blurted out some words and probably realised after finishing the sentence.

@thewire_in While I can't defend what Udhay said, I think we can give a benefit of doubt to what he actually intended. Those phrases sounded out of context and were not in sync. But the words he used had obviously other meaning. He could have said that last cauvery remark realising the same.
