GenCast is out in @Nature! It's the first high res ML ensemble weather forecast which outperformed the operational state of the art. And few more things have happened since the preprint was first released ⬇️🧵

Today in @Nature, we’re presenting GenCast: our new AI weather model which gives us the probabilities of different weather conditions up to 15 days ahead with state-of-the-art accuracy. ☁️⚡

Here’s how the technology works. 🧵https://t.co/PWCNWbQnlU

Google Deepmind (FNV3) CRUSHED the forecast for #Isaias up to 11 days in advance. It picked up some appreciable signal on September 23, locked in on the exact landfall location4 days before it happened, and nailed the peak intensity consistently 3 days before it happened. A new age of forecasting is upon us.

Excited to share WeatherNext 3 from @GoogleDeepMind and @GoogleResearch!
High-res temperature and precipitation forecasting using the latest satellite observations 🛰️

It's also the best global weather model according to Brightband's live leaderboard!

Our new Nature paper describing our WeatherNext cyclones model is out!

A decade’s worth of progress in track and intensity forecasting. And it’s fully open source, Including a mini version which runs in a free colab (and is still really good!)

[Ferran Alet @FerranAlet]

Very excited to share our @Nature paper today! 🌀
WeatherNext Cyclones predicts cyclone track, intensity & wind structure with 24+ extra hours of lead time over previous state-of-the-art, on average.

This leap is equivalent to a decade of progress in the weather community🚀

Predicting cyclones accurately can help save lives - and every hour of lead time counts.

Published in @Nature, our AI model WeatherNext achieves state-of-the-art accuracy in forecasting a storm’s track and intensity, giving us a critical extra 24 hours to prepare on average. 🧵

[Deelan Jariwala @WxTca]

Forwarding these plots over from @FranklinJamesL’s BlueSky account. In 2025, the Google DeepMind model has outperformed everyone on track, including the NHC and the HCCA consensus. It is competitive with the NHC and HCCA on intensity as well, outperforming the hurricane models.

I had a great time speaking at Cambridge yesterday.

Thanks @PetarV_93 @pl219_Cambridge for the invite!

[Petar Veličković @PetarV_93]

We're starting now! 🥳🌦️

You may join us on Zoom if you are not in Cambridge today.

[Petar Veličković @PetarV_93]

I'm excited to share that we'll have @IlanPrice giving a talk @Cambridge_CL on GenCast -- a state-of-the-art model for probabilistic weather forecasting 🌦️⛈️⛅️

If you're in Cambridge next Weds (19 Feb), consider joining us -- it's open to all!

All details (+ Zoom link) below!
