Now that SC has stayed UGC regulation, and there is a bit of breather here is what I want to say. 1990 was a year that changed my life forever. In August 1990, my mother and I fled Kashmir valley. We were the last Hindu family in our neighborhood to flee, because my mother kept hoping against hope that somebody would save us. Nobody did. Ultimately we decided to leave our home. Only home we had. A kind Sikh truck driver agreed to drive us till Jammu and then we were on our own. We sat huddled in the back of that truck too afraid to even weep. We had no belongings except few clothes in a bag and a bundle of papers my mother held close to her bosom in the entire journey. These were her certificates from school and college. She was hoping to find a job based on those certificates. I was too young to have any certificates yet. But she did and that was all we had. Her degrees. Somehow we managed to find roof on our heads in Faridabad, near Delhi. We thought this would at least be an end to some of our miseries.Lo and behold Mandal agitation started. This was a double whammy. Now we were suddenly ‘upper caste’ and for reason unknown to us, Govt of the time had turned against us. We were not privileged, we were not rich, we were so worn down by Islamists that we had no time to reflect on our so called ‘privilege’. But this moment produced a stunning epiphany. We had not been prosecuted in Kashmir valley for our caste. We had been ethnically cleansed because of our faith. It just did not make sense why would Hindus not unite against this existential threat. When Advani ji gave a call of Hindutva and asked everyone to rise above their caste, it made sense to me. In fact that is the only thing that made sense to me. Hindutva keeps Bharat together and Bharat is where Dharma thrives. I often remember that visual of my mother clasping her certificates in one hand and holding my head with her other hand. Many so called ‘privileged castes’ have only one thing to fall back upon. Education and hard work. That is why these UGC regulations were bad faith laws because it takes away freedom from students for whom education is the only passport to success. Regardless of which caste they belong to. Why create battlefields in the campuses? These students will anyway enter the works full of landmines when their education is over.
My humble appeal to the legislators who draft laws and to the Executive who implement laws is this - Don’t do anything that will create further divisions. And my humble appeal to protestors - Dharma is what keeps us together. Dharma is what gives us courage to fight. Dharma will protect us from our enemies. Stay together. Stay United.

KASHMIRI HINDU FORCED EXODUS DAY .

Dear Friends,

I spent my day in somber remembrance of the forced exodus of my beloved ethnic Kashur speaking Kashmiri Hindu community by visiting ruins of former Kashmiri Hindu homes in Malmoh village in Baramulla District of North Kashmir Valley. I was accompanied by a group of Kashmiri civil society members drawn from both Kashmiri Muslim community and resident Kashmiri Hindu community in visiting a former abandoned Kashmiri Hindu village located in North Kashmir.

It was in January 1990 that Kashmiri Hindus began leaving Kashmir Valley en masse, out of fear of threat to their lives and most importantly out of fear of threat of dishonor of their women by Pakistan backed militants. It was terrorists of Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) a terrorist movement armed by terrorist nation of Pakistan that terrorized, gunned down, raped, tortured and killed innocent members of Kashmiri Hindu community in most brutal manner to force them to leave Kashmir Valley so that an "independent Kashmir" could be created

What was the scale of forced exodus?

Nearly 98% of Kashmiri Hindus were violently thrown out of Kashmir within a span of less than 3-6 months. Out of more than 77,000 Kashmiri Hindu families before 1990, less than 700 remained.

Why were Kashmiri Hindus targeted?

Kashmiri Hindus were seen as "Agents of India" and " biggest hurdle" in the way of achieving "Azadi" to create an independent Muslim supremacist Islamic Republic of Kashmir or "Nizam-e-Mustafa", which was not to have any place for so called "kafir" Hindus.

What was the role of Kashmiri Muslims in the forced exodus of Kashmiri Hindus?

While there were few amongst majority Kashmiri Muslim community, who actively collaborated with the terrorist organization of JKLF in forcing Kashmiri Hindus to leave Kashmir Valley in 1990, a vast majority of Kashmiri Muslims remained silent as helpless Kashmiri Hindus were butchered, brutally tortured & raped to forcibly drive them away from Kashmir Valley.

My father's generation who remained silent in this sin of forcing Kashmiri Hindus to leave Kashmir also shamelessly created the falsehood of "JAGMOHAN CONSPIRACY" to essentially cover up their own role in forced Kashmiri Hindu exodus.

The truth is that - No Kashmiri Hindu left Kashmir Valley out of his/her own will.

To cover up their own crimes, my father's generation of Kashmiri Muslims fed shameless lies & propaganda to my & subsequent generation of Kashmiri Muslims that Governor JAGMOHAN facilitated "Migration" of Kashmiri Hindus.

The Forced Exodus of Kashmir Hindus tore apart the social fabric of ethnic Kashur speaking Kashmiri Valley. Absence of religious diversity gave rise to religious extremism, religious radicalisation & intolerance in Kashmir Valley.

Kashmiri Hindus were social & cultural glue that stuck together Kashmir's diverse communities in a tapestry of secular, tolerant and moderate Sufi Muslim culture. All of that crumbled after 1990, destroying Kashmiri society.

Kashmiri Hindus have suffered enormously. They have missed their share of Kashmir's snowfall for the last 35 years. Most importantly, their identity as ethnic Kashur Hindus is now at stake as the community grows outside Kashmir.

All religious, social & cultural festivals of the Kashmiri Hindu community are linked with land & soil of Kashmir. It cannot be effectively preserved outside Kashmir. Time is unfortunately running out fast & that is worrying.

For Kashmiri Muslims, return of Kashmiri Hindus is absolutely essential for restoration of erstwhile secular Kashmiri culture that was a mix of Kashmiri Hindu Shaivism & Kashmiri Sufi Islam. Time is running out for us too.

As a first step, Kashmiri Muslim society, especially my father's generation must come clean, admit its role of being mute spectators in the forced Kashmiri Hindu exodus of 1990 and apologize for its sins.That will be the real beginning of "Naya Kashmir "

I am here in Washington, DC, for work, but I can’t forget that today marks 35 years since January 19, 1990, when over 300,000 indigenous Kashmiri Hindus, including myself, were driven out of our homes in Kashmir by Pakistan-sponsored jihadi terrorists.
