I really appreciate the idealism of everyone who is so good at spotting stock market bubbles and uses that skill to do political punditry rather than getting rich as an investor.
I'm a moron who buys and holds because I think errors are equally probably in either direction.
Perhaps naive but I wish we should not refer to GLP-1s as “weight loss” drugs. Here’s the thing: if they caused weight loss without health benefits (like say amphetamines) they would, from my perspective as a physician, be useless (or worse). The reason why they have …
Stop a statin and your LDL cholesterol rises 30% in four days. Nobody writes a WSJ feature about it. Stop certain blood pressure medications and your BP can spike within hours. Nobody calls it a design flaw.
Levothyroxine, antidepressants, insulin, metformin, antihistamines. Chronic treatments for chronic conditions, and all of them stop working when you stop taking them. None of them generate think-pieces questioning whether patients should have started.
The AMA classified obesity as a disease in 2013. Thirteen years later, it’s still the only chronic condition where “you have to take it forever” is framed as an argument against treatment rather than a description of how medicine works.
My bill to legalize peeling bananas has passed the house! current law made it functionally impossible to peel a banana at many daycares but seamless to open a bag of chips-my bill creates a separate class for healthy low risk foods like peeled fruit and veggies and ensures day cares aren’t punished for serving them - when laws are centered on listening to people who are most impacted by them (kids, parents and daycare workers-rather than lawyers and big corporations) we get better policy!
The core problem with Shoplifting Is Moral Under Leftism discourse, like so many discourses before it, is that our social media algorithms select for this.
We exist online in a system that is designed to find the most childish and inflammatory opinions and amplify them to millions of people.
In an earlier age, gatekeepers existed to stop morons with puerile or reprehensible views from being heard. That had upsides and downsides. But now gatekeepers don't exist and everyone, even the New York Times, is just chasing clicks any way they can.
Invite on the hot doofus to say blowing up stuff is cool and shoplifting is good but plastic cups are a moral travesty. Why not? That'll go viral, you'll probably get a bonus. Watch everyone get mad, lolz, so owned.
This is what our media is doing to us. These people are freaks, they're not normal, but they're shoved in our faces for the purpose of chasing the last three dollars left in media.
One of the largest spills of untreated wastewater in American history happened while an environmental review process held up sewer line repairs because they were studying risks to a flower and a bat.
Nothing like paying these council members over $100,000 a year in our tax dollars to larp as diplomats while the problems they actually have control over go unsolved.
You want to give Warren the benefit of the doubt since the ROAD to Housing Act contained many great provisions, but upholding virtue signaling over creating more supply and better results because it may sound progressive is counterproductive at best, and incredibly frustrating.
great news - House Democrats are pushing back on the deranged "no build to rent" provision that makes it harder to be a renter in America. call your rep and tell them to get Warren's idiocy excised before they support the bill
We were close to a major national YIMBY bill, one that would have made real progress.
Then the dumbest people on both sides turned it into a bill that stops housing from getting built, because they're obsessed with the completely fake problem of 'big companies rent homes'
Elizabeth Warren turned out to be one of the most profound disappointments imaginable as a Senator. Presented as a technocrat interested in what works, actually the absolute worst of the slopulists.
Hey look! @nejm moved my writing to a new spot.
Here's the first post, a rant about a particularly annoying requirement for those of us in work in hospitals

As someone who completed a 5 year surgical residency, normal people don’t quit when they’re 6 months from finishing unless there’s a major red flag. Additionally, people with those red flags shouldn’t be surgeon general.
