Debunking the Phantom Debts and Ecological Loan Fallacy

My attention has been drawn to trending claims by the Anambra State Government that my administration left behind inherited debts, including a ₦2 billion ecological loan, contractor liabilities, and unpaid salaries, gratuities, and pensions. This is completely false.

We systematically liquidated historical gratuities and arrears dating back several years, amounting to over ₦35 billion. At the point of handover, the state owed nothing in salaries, gratuities, or pensions, nor did we owe anything to any contractor for projects duly executed and certified.

The ₦2 billion ecological fund in question was released barely three months before the end of my tenure for the Oko/Umuchiana erosion crisis. Despite pressure to spend the money, I refused, insisting that it should be left for my successor because government is a continuum and the funds were tied to a specific project.

The money was therefore left 100 per cent intact in First Bank, in Account No. 2018779464, with a balance of over ₦2.13 billion.

It is important to stress that funds tied to specific projects or set aside for particular purposes were not even included in the over ₦75 billion in savings we left behind.

If anybody can establish anything to the contrary, I will stop campaigning. -PO

A taxi driver who caused the death of a man on the A23 in Surrey after driving for prolonged periods has been jailed for six years.

Footage from Kolawole Erunkulu’s car captured the moment he fell asleep at the wheel in Merstham, shortly before 6.30am on Sunday, 17 August.

Erunkulu was charged with causing death by dangerous driving in March 2026 and pleaded guilty at court in June.

At Guildford Crown Court, he was sentenced to six years in prison for causing death by dangerous driving. He was also disqualified from driving for eight years, to run concurrently with his prison sentence.

Erunkulu’s Audi swerved across the carriageway before colliding with a Volkswagen being driven by Philip Dray, who was parked at the side of the road.

Data from Erunkulu’s employers, along with footage from the interior camera of his vehicle, showed that he had driven for around 53 hours during the three days leading up to the fatal collision.

The case highlights the devastating consequences of driving while fatigued and the importance of taking adequate breaks when behind the wheel.

An NHS worker could be banned from driving after being caught travelling the wrong way up a motorway slip road in an attempt to avoid traffic.

Innocent Ayodele, 32, from Manchester, was seen driving against the flow of traffic on an entry slip road to the M61. The incident occurred as he tried to bypass heavy congestion on the motorway.

Appearing in court, Ayodele explained that he was attempting to get home quickly to his pregnant wife. However, the court heard that he already has nine penalty points on his driving licence, placing him at risk of disqualification.

He is expected to be sentenced at a later date, where a driving ban remains a strong possibility.
