Two questions I'd love never to hear again: "The Arabs have 20 countries. Why can't the Palestinians go there?" For the same reason that most Chileans want to stay in Chile and not move to Mexico or Argentina. It's the place they love, most of them were born there, and they have as much of a right to live there as anyone else.
And the parallel question: "Why can't the Jews go back to Europe?" First, most Israelis today are descended from Jews that came from Morocco, Iraq, Yemen, and other North African and Middle Eastern countries. And second, same answer: most were born there and have as much of a right to live there as anyone else.
Few things are more deluded, damaging, or dangerous than talking of "another Nakba," or dreaming that "they will leave like the French left Algeria." No. Neither will happen. We are fated to somehow share this place no matter what.
I've just invoked Art.99 of the UN Charter - for the 1st time in my tenure as Secretary-General.
Facing a severe risk of collapse of the humanitarian system in Gaza, I urge the Council to help avert a humanitarian catastrophe & appeal for a humanitarian ceasefire to be declared.

Tens of thousands protesting in Tel Aviv, demanding that the government do everything to bring the hostages back NOW. I add: enough death. More life. End this stupid war now. (And no, Hamas will not be “destroyed.” Gaza will be, and Hamas will remain.)
@BadEmpanada @joshualeifer @bhbradlow You are so wrong. As an Israeli, all I see are losses from oppressing Palestinians. And there are many others like me. Hamas killed many of them. The international left has to acknowledge the value of our lives as well. Or - Hypocrisy. Value democracy or hypocrisy.
Such an awful day! So many things to say about Vivian. I was always amazed by her selfless attitude! She was one of the first people I reached out to when I cofounded @MEJDI_Tours. She spent so much time helping us build our content and making connections.
I am heartbroken 💔
@AmiDar Yes! And also maybe true for you, when I meet a Palestinian in my daily life I immediately feel a connection because everyone outside the conflict really has no idea. But we do. And we talk, and I know the “We” I want to be part of includes that person.
BREAKING: 80 rabbis & rabbinical students across denominations and political affiliations just released this video urging the larger Jewish community and U.S. leaders to call for a #CeasefireNOW.
Watch and share #Rabbis4Ceasefire now:
@DanielSeidemann The more we know how crucial it is for human health and well being to have access to nature, not to mention healthy food and basic security... What it does to human development ☹️
And I will never excuse what Hamas did either.
The loneliest people in the world right now: those morally heroic Palestinians and Israelis who can see the truth and the legitimacy of both narratives, and who care and grieve about the kids on both sides as if they were their own. I love you so.
@AmiDar Recently looked at a post from Israelim Metzitzim and was appalled and saddened by the callous cheering for the razing of Gaza no matter the death toll. Of course I mostly follow others who are devastated.
I am an Israeli Jew. I refuse to see all Palestinians as my enemy. Do some of them want me gone? Of course. Do some Israelis want them gone? Of course. But I can still decide where I stand. I am not a toddler. I can choose. And I choose to continue looking for a way forward.
We cannot lose sight of the only realistic foundation for a true peace & stability: a two-State solution.
Israelis must see their legitimate needs for security materialized.
Palestinians must see their legitimate aspirations for an independent State realized.
🔺We are devastated to confirm that two more @UNRWA colleagues have been killed in📍#Gaza. The entire Agency is grieving
🔺@UNRWA continues to advocate for adherence to international humanitarian law - @UN staff & civilians must be protected at all times
