The Chromebook backlash is growing.
Many tech execs send kids to screen free schools. Many college professors now ban all screens in class. They know that students learn less with a multifunction device on their desks.
Parents, teachers, and principals are demanding change:
If your child becomes a reader, about 80% of the education job is already done. That's my honest assessment after working in education for over thirty years. Everything else is secondary. Most parents think science education is important. Yes it is. But if you can't read the biology textbook, you're not going to learn biology.
Reading is the meta-skill that enables all other skills. History requires reading. Science requires reading. Even math increasingly requires reading as it becomes more sophisticated. The child who reads voraciously will figure out everything else. The child who doesn't will struggle with everything.
I live in Bad Bunny’s hometown.
We shop where he worked as a bagger.
We deliver lunches in the community he was raised.
Members of his family have been volunteers at our non-profit.
And from here, we can tell the world: he is generous, he is genuine, he is talented, he is us.
💯 I would only add: This doesn't even count the issues with taking that Chromebook home and watching YouTube & streaming instead of doing homework, reading, journaling, or just getting to that state of boredom where kids discover what they're passionate about.
Should states be barred from doing anything to address the dangers of AI for kids? Of course not. This poll shows what we all know - Republican and Democrat voters overwhelmingly agree that protecting kids is important.
We got this all so wrong with social media (still no protections at all), and we're about to do the same thing with AI, especially chatbots and AI "friends" instead of real people.
I hope Congress is listening and stops any attempt to prevent state legislators from protecting children online.

@RawTheology@datechris I’d be curious to have someone time how much Chris spoke versus how much time George spoke. It felt like one of the two dominated the time😂😂😂. Thanks for the podcast, Preston! Always informative and fun to listen to.
@SkyeJethani Random, but loosely connected: Brennan Manning, in his book “The Signature of Jesus” writes about the ‘Trinity of America’ - hedonism, nationalism, & consumerism. It seems that those three could serve as a rubric or talking points for those in the church. 🤷♂️
From Rachel Held Evan’s last blog post, written 3 years ago on Ash Wednesday.
She’s been gone so long.
And it’s like she was just here.
Death is as real than anything I’ve ever known.

@StephenCurry30 From my 13 year-old son, Jack: You’re my favorite player, on and off the court, and I’m coming to watch you play in Portland this Thursday! I’ll be at Top Golf on Wednesday @ 5:30 pm if you wanna come swing it with me. Can’t wait to see you play! Great ASG!!!
It's time to re-evaluate those studies that found that "screen time" had very low correlations with teen depression/anxiety. 2 new studies show that social media has a much tighter relationship than screen time. One is by me, @jean_twenge, and Kevin Cummins:
@NA_Dellsey@Sisyphus38 Honestly, I’m not sure...I know I’m far from perfect in the classroom. When it comes to manipulation, I think that’s a matter of the heart. In my heart and mind I think my motives are pure, but I’m only human, so who knows🤷♂️😂.
@NA_Dellsey@Sisyphus38 Exactly is a loaded word, but generally speaking, when students thinking is appropriately challenged (rigor) with relevant thinking work (relates to their lives and the world around them) and you have built quality, academic relationships, classroom management is rarely an issue.
