A quick story I put together. People often ask what are realistic good outcomes for a defense in an environment that makes it so difficult for them. I took the opportunity to use the Euro data available to me
“Too many times it’s all about winning, winning, winning. You have to surrender to the idea that when you’re going after that you’re gonna fail, we failed by not winning, but we stick to the process of being able to do that.”
“I’m attracted to the dark side of greatness. The gap between a hero and a villain is very similar to the gap between winning and losing and good to great. The gap is so much closer than people think. It’s the very small fundamental details that separate you,” Joe Mazzulla
The immeasurable value of fundamentals.
@DeanO_Lytics@SurlyBull So how different (or similar) is this to Same-4 lineup analysis looking to isolate impact? Also, when you say other players having positive D numbers in other games, is that in relation to their Individual D Rating and/or Stocks?
Same floor, same play, same round of the playoffs … different result.
@ZachLowe_NBA and @BigWos discuss a play from the Wolves in Game 5 that was the exact same play the Spurs ran in 2014.
@DeanO_Lytics Dean, love the adv box scores at ESPN, curious on the formula for net points/4 factors accounting, as well as (this may be the same question) how a player like Obi Toppin topped the D-Net Points leaderboard with lower Stocks, similar fouls & minutes as Myles Turner for example
Boys 4x800 relay is heading to State!!! They broke the school record at Sectionals today with a time of 8:33.23.

I asked Luke Kornet about his memories from stretches where he was a DNP for many games in a row, and what his message is to the young guys who find themselves in that position now:
“It's just a lot of peace to come to life of accepting the position that you're in and then just doing the best with that, versus trying to fight it and want to be in a different one.”
“You can spend a lot of time worrying about things that you can't really control. But when you just take the opportunity that you have and do the best with that, you can have days like today where a lot of guys came in and were able to contribute. You can have peace about knowing that you did your job well, just as you did the day before, the day after. It might just look a different way every time. I feel like that's what I've been taught through my life. That's the only thing attitude that you can have that you can actually do something with – versus trying to control things that are outside of what you can control.”
Asked Joe Mazzulla if he feels when teams struggle on offense, it’s seen as a slump, but other things are inherently seen as a matter of effort:
“That is the most profound statement in my three years, is what you just said.”
“Me and you are going to grow in our relationship.”
