Great opportunity to work and learn alongside one of the brightest, kindest, and most thoughtful minds I've met in life in general and Academia in particular. Reach out to any former colleague of hers and you're certain to hear only good things about Alejandra!
@tom_b_elliot Not vegan and support that choice of catering. However, cutting beef and dairy from the menu will drastically reduce the food GHG emissions and there is less need for tiptoeing sensitivities.
@NicholasDCarter So it definitely shouldn't be used as a rule of thumb but one can not jump at the people who believe it is always true. They've just fallen prey to marketing fads. Nobody expect maybe food experts have time to know the right answer if given the specifics to the question
@NicholasDCarter The question of whether local is better for the environment is problematic, too broad and -> highly dependent on the specifics. It is not a generalizable statement but it isn't wrong either. One needs to specify which aspect of the environment, the product, and season to decide
@FoodProfessor Very generous use of "around the world", I think you mean G7 plus two small European countries. Relevant numbers nonetheless showcasing quite a range.
@_HannahRitchie@WWF@OfficialZSL@OurWorldInData Hanna it seems as if the LPI is a problematic choice of composite metric? Seems like all the work behind LPI ends up being summarized in a metric that very few people easily understand. Does the single index do a disservice to all the work being done behind the scenes?
@GabeFilippelli Left looks better but image seems a bit unrelated to topic, right background is way more aligned, but aesthetically not appealing (inexpert opinion on design here). So neither...
I think the greatest irony is actually knowing that rivers and reservoirs are drying up because alfalfa is grown in a desert to feed cattle and some if it goes overseas, so not even a US self sufficiency concern...

The Colorado River is in big trouble, and farmers might be getting $1500/acre to cut water use 20%.
They're mostly growing alfalfa for feedlot beef.
And you thought almond milk was causing water problems!
@DanCharlesNow reports.

@AyeshaTandon@tomoprater It is very hard to stay optimistic when one sees that Europe's bottom 50% consumes at a level higher than the 2C goal and more than double than the 1.5C goal. The speed of decarbonization needs to be astounding because everyone is aspiring to live at least as comfortably as them
