@AlanMCole@CoreyWriting The real insight is many DC/MD parents think they’re buying NYC quality privates, but actually outcomes are similar at local publics, and MUCH better at TJ/Montgomery Blair
@davidbessis@CoFore856 I read your post but it feels like you’re just relabeling talent as attitude. The crux is that we don’t know how to make (or teach) more great mathematicians.
@mbateman This is the first year of alpha read, right? What surprises were there and what do you expect to change for the next year? I’m very interested in how alpha will continuously improve its products!
@Noahpinion That’s incorrect - people intuitively want it to backfire, but this article only shows diminishing returns, which of course is true of almost everything
@mattyglesias What exactly is your take here - if you care about education you should send your kid to a lower quality public school instead of a privatee/suburbs?
Isn’t that like saying you should walk through a dangerous neighborhood if you care about crime when you can just avoid it?
@jliemandt Im all in on Alpha and I’m trying to recruit for a new Alpha campus, but one parent asked why Alpha had only one National Merit Semi Finalist last year. If tests are the best metric to compare, how should I explain why Alpha doesn’t have more top test takers?
@jliemandt I’ve been trying to recruit parents, and one asked me if Alpha’s results are so strong why was there only a single National Merit Semifinalist last year.
Some magnets have 50%+ of kids as NMSFs, so even given the small size of Alpha it should be higher - what do you think?
@mattyglesias All politicians have to be charismatic, but that’s totally different from extroversion. I think many, many national politicians (if not most) are actually pretty hardcore introverts—many spend more time in the call room than the chicken dinner!
@mattyglesias Charming sure, but I think a pretty high proportion of politicians are actually introverts in the vein of Obama.
The more local they are (city council) they tend to be extroverted because of the need for direct voter contact, but at the national level it’s the opposite.
@jliemandt We got the Bethesda email and I’m excited about it, but there’s huge potential for Alpha around McLean, VA - either a new Alpha or converting the existing Guideposts in Fairfax or Alexandria. Happy to work with anyone to make it happen!
@jliemandt@mbateman Can you share more broadly how Alpha teaches history/social studies? It doesn’t seem as good a fit as math/reading/science for either the AI or the workshop parts. Is there a history curriculum available somewhere?
@sarah_cone@nateliason Off subject, but why do you prefer Russian math to AoPS? I’m trying to find the best fit for us and it seems like AoPS has a higher ceiling
