The 42 feet tall Karkala Gomateshwara, also known as the Shri Gommateshwara Statue, is located on a rocky hillock called Gommata Betta in Karkala.

Due to the region’s high rainfall, the 15th century CE monolith colossi has been subjected to significant environmental exposure over time. This had resulted in the accumulation of dust, dirt and thick moss growth on the surface, along with noticeable deterioration of the stone in certain areas. (1/2)

A Jain inscription from Ajaigarh that I discovered last year. It is dated Vikrama Saṃvat 1346, Āṣāḍha, śukla pakṣa 12, Thursday. The record is poorly preserved, and much of it is illegible. The last line records salutations to Tīrthankara Neminatha whose lanchan conch is sculpted below his broken idol in dhyānamudrā. The second line which likely furnishes the details of the donor is also illegible.

The first mentions the reigning Chandela king whose name is not preserved either. Given the date of the record, the king is likely Hammiravarman, the last major Chandela ruler. He was likely the son of Vīravarman Chandela, but not his direct successor. He succeeded Bhojavarman Chandela whose position in the Chandela family tree is uncertain.

This inscription also happens to be the last Jain record from the Ajaigarh fort.
