@PaulaJBrowning @stephen_PtC The Ministry of Education is a big machine to turn around! This re-think of direction in literacy in NZ has occurred relatively quickly in the big picture. As you say children with dyslexia needed this change years ago, what we can do is make sure it is implemented & embedded now

@stephen_PtC Have you out of interest given older children - year 5’s for example a full phonemic awareness check? We were shocked at the gaps when we did this in 2018/19.

@stephen_PtC Agree there is more to whole language than visual cues, what seemed to have happened over the years is that some educators and schools narrowed the phonemic awareness, blends etc aspects. Effective PLD in how to teach reading has been MIA for too many in recent years

@stephen_PtC If you did a full phonetical awareness check on the children you think do not need a structured explicit approach to learning to cracking the code you may be surprised about the gaps they still bring to learning the foundation skills they need to learn to read.

@stephen_PtC Oral language and literary experiences vary greatly in children’s upbringing. Your school may have more starting with a solid phonetic knowledge for other schools there will be increasingly very few that do.

NEMP is really the only consistent ongoing assessment stream of data in NZ over that period - All the best at the MOE👍

@Sulzyb Visit MOE website & look up vulnerable employees - if you are not feeling safe due to an underlying health condition do not go to work, you will be on paid discretionary leave & work from home (maybe managing distance learning children)
