What could spark a riot in a city of a quarter million people? A political assassination? A military invasion? An economic collapse?

In Ephesus, it was the preaching of a missionary named Paul. We read about it today in Bible in One Year in Acts 19.

Keep these facts in mind about Ephesus. It was one of the greatest cities in the Roman Empire, and at its heart stood the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

That temple was much more than a place of worship. It was the city's bank, tourist attraction, economic engine, and the very symbol of Ephesian identity. Pilgrims streamed there from across the Mediterranean. Merchants made money selling miniature shrines. Festivals celebrated Artemis. Religion, commerce, politics, and civic pride were inseparable.

That is why the riot broke out. The Gospel that Paul preached was not simply “one more religious option.” It shook the very foundation of everything that made Ephesus the city it was.

When Demetrius complains that Paul is persuading people that "gods made with hands are not gods" (Acts 19:26), he is defending livelihoods, the local economy, and the city's reputation. If people stop worshiping Artemis, they stop buying idols. If they stop buying idols, craftsmen lose their income. If Artemis loses honor, Ephesus loses its pride.

Paul's message threatened the entire fabric of the city.

The angry crowd packed into the city's theater, which seated some 25,000 people, shouting for two hours, "Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!" (Acts 19:34). Only the intervention of the city clerk prevented Rome from viewing the disturbance as an illegal riot.

Acts 19 reminds us why, in another city, Paul’s detractors said he was “turning the world upside-down” (Acts 17:6). Paul proclaimed one Lord, Jesus Christ, in a city built on many lords. His message challenged idols, commerce, politics, culture, and spiritual darkness.

As it was then, so it is now: Christianity is not a walled-off religious cubicle in our lives. It directs all of who we are, what we do, what we think.

The Lord whom we worship is the Lord of all we are. O come, let us worship him!

Fauci was not in charge of any covid policy decision making. National Security Council, a military-intelligence advisory body to POTUS (Trump 1.0) was in charge in 2020. No representatives of HHS are on this council, and even if Fauci was in the room (per his released government records he never was) - he did not make any decisions.
