Referred pain in the abdomen 😣 (via Netter’s Illustrations)

Referred pain is pain that is felt in a different part of the body than the actual source of the pain. This occurs as the nerves that carry pain signals from different organs and tissues converge in the spinal cord and brain and the brain is unable to perceive where it’s coming from.

Other examples of referred pain include:

1. Heart attack: pain in the neck, jaw, arms
2. Spleen injury: pain in the left shoulder blade (Kehr’s sign)
3. Brain freeze: pain in the head after eating or drinking something cold
