We laid flowers in memory of the International Brigades, who fought against fascism in the Spanish Civil War (1936–39). Around 2,400 people joined the British Battalion, taking part in battles such as those at Belchite, Jarama, Brunete or the Battle of the Ebro.
Let us not forget, on VE Day and Victory Day 2025, who were the first Britons to take up arms against Hitler, Mussolini and fascism – while their own government helped secure Franco’s victory in Spain. ¡No pasarán!
Before the 1-1 draw between @ClaptonCFC & Forest Hill Park, (with a record 1,432 crowd for the season's last home game) there was an event to unveil a plaque to Newham's International Brigade volunteers, with speakers, songs & poems from the @IBMT_SCW, Clapton CCFC & @billybragg
This Saturday we are unveiling the Newham International Brigades Memorial with a ceremony at the Old Spotted Dog Ground starting at 1pm - gates open 12.30. Join us in commemorating volunteers in Newham who fought against fascism in Spain from 1936-39
